If it's not covered by one of those other categories, you should probably talk about it here. Be nice.

In our town, we are having a memorial service for someone that lived in our town, that has died in Iraq serving our country.

This 'special' site has taken it on themselves to picket and protest this particular memorial to show that this soldier died in vain, because God is punishing the USA because we support homosexuality. A Wife and I believe a few kids will be mourning while these assholes tear down what was their father/husband.

I, myself believe in God, but these dumbfucks have crossed that line called 'good-taste'.

Do what you want with this post, but I am informing you of what is happening in this country.

(PS - this organization has sites in Canada and other countries too)

I have known about this for a while. I thought laws were passed preventing them picketing within so many feet of the service?

I think they are ignorant bastards who should be taken out and shot, but this is america, and they have the right to free speech no matter how retarded they are.

just because some people who claim to believe in God use it for their personal agendas, not all of us do.

I find it funny.
It's simple ignorance.
God doesn't preach hate, and and the bible also that you will have to answer for every soul you turn away from him, by you actions.

I hope none of the mourners get hurt by them..emotionally i mean.

I'm waiting for the day when a vet in mourning snaps and takes care of the issue.

Once again, my poor faulty brain lets me down. There is an organization that consists of veterans and their families and friends that will show up at a memorial service or burial for those killed in action that will stand with American flags between the family and these bible toting asshole protesters. Their intention is to provide a barrier between the family of the soldier and the assholes so the family doesn't have to deal with even seeing them. I can't remember the name of the group, but they are all over the country. Usually, they have someone monitoring this right wing religous zealot group and will show up unasked and they usually show up in greater numbers than the protesters even think about.

Found it!

The group is called the Patriot Guard Riders and their website is

http://patriotguard.org.

Their goal is to make sure the idiots from Westboro Baptist in Topeka, KS don't get close enough to disrupt memorial services for service men and women.

Being an army brat myself and hanging out with bikers has given me an appreciation of what these guys are doing. Most of the old bikers are veterans themselves (Vietnam) and they take service to your country very seriously.

It does suck that they have to do what they do, but I'm glad they're doing it. If anyone needs them, just get on the website and contact them. Most of the time, the Westboro jackasses are outnumbered 5 to 1 when the Patriot Guard shows up and the grieving family never has to see them.

.....but i'm sure http://www.godloveslesbians.com (don't click, it's not an actual site).... No, but seriously though, that's a little fucked up... If that shit's really in the bible, which i'm not gonna waste my time browsing for it, then that gives me even more reason to believe that some old dude on fucking hallucinogens wrote the bible during a 4-day peyote trip... It's also somewhere in the bible that women menstruating is a sin... Throw rocks at her!!!

NOTE: I do not feel like getting into a religious debate, nor do I feel like writing about my beliefs.

Damn. That's still kind've fucked up. I could understand being unclean if they didn't shower properly... but ummmm, enough with that discussion, haha, i'm sure nobody wants to read about that type of thing... I have no clue what levitical law is, I haven't researched most religions that deeply... Most've them seem too cultish for me to even be halfway interested in reading about them.

I have no words for how awful I think this organization is. As both the daughter of a Vietnam Vet and the Aunt of an Army Veteran, I find this extremely offensive on a personal level. I think this group should be considered a hate group because that'sactly what they are. I recognize everyone's right o opeacably assemble and protest, but I don't think committing a hate crime at a funeral is protected by the constitiution.

Wikipedia wrote:A hate group is an organized group or movement that advocates hate, hostility, or violence towards members of a race, ethnicity, religion, or other sector of society, or that supports and publishes assertions and argumentation characteric of hate groups without necessarily explicitly advocating such hate or violence that otherwise characterize hate groups. The term "hate group" is not used by these groups themselves, but rather by those who oppose them, and sometimes by sociologists or historians who study them. Many groups described this way disagree with the term as misconstruing their motives or goals.

Hate groups usually assert that the targets of their attacks are harmful to society, malicious, less fit to be members of society, or are operating some hidden cabal. The evidence hate groups present for these assertions is usually poorly corroborated, and is often based explicitly on the hate group's negative beliefs about the social groups to which the target is or is imagined to belong (e.g. groups based on race, national origin, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, etc.).

Although their evidence is usually inaccurate, sub-standard and widely rejected by society, the hate group continues to propagate assertions, myths, narratives and rumours, playing upon fear, xenophobia, blame or jealousy, with the aim of harming the individuals and groups they target, and inciting others to distrust or hate them also. The ultimate aim of a hate group is commonly the delegitimization, elimination, and exclusion of groups, or the harm, deportation, or death of individuals. Hate groups often use their victims as scapegoats to blame for discontent in society.

I think they fit the bill. Ever since i first heard of this group they have absolutly astounded me.

if one of my friends died in the military, and they were at his funeral, I would be in jail.

Um, by that definition, most of the Republican party qualifies.

Anyway, as far as I'm concerned, the "god hates fags" bunch are fools, and the scum of the earth. But they do have a right to be scum of the earth if they want to be.

And the right to free speech is more important than the right to not be offended by something someone else is doing in a public place. The way to deal with them is with counter-protests, not by passing laws that COULD BE USED AGAINST YOU SOMEDAY.

We are all atheists about most of the gods that humanity has ever believed in. Some of us just go one god further.
