First, sorry if this is a breach of etiquite as a previous thread about this fillm had been closed. I just saw this over the weekend and wanted to post my thoughts.
The introduction of the 2 main protagonists is quick and brutal, and sets the stage quite well for what is to transpire in the caverns. There are some funny jabs at guys from this all female cast, particularly at what we tend to buy them for gifts. While no one character stands out as strongly as say Alex from Haute Tension, or Ripley, from Alien, they all do a passable job.
The action builds slowly once they enter the caverns. It is dark and every bit as claustrophobic as I had heard. But once the shit hits the fan, and it hits very hard indeed, it never lets up.
If the characters were more likeable, if there was just one "super cool chick," I'd have liked this movie much more. For me, characters are as important to a film as the plot, which is why so many horror films just flat out fail. The strengths of this movie are in its cinematography, its creatures, its pacing, and its eye for gore. Other than that, I had only one complaint which I understand was added to the American release. You'll know which scene I'm talking about when you see it. It insults my intelligence and it insults the strength of the picture. Fucking Americans, always mucking with shit...
3.5 out of 5
Would I buy the DVD? Definately. Will opt for the European release if possible due to that one unnnecessary addition.
