If it's not covered by one of those other categories, you should probably talk about it here. Be nice.

i got this email a week or so ago...

Dear Ben,

Your representative, John Duncan, dealt a blow to Internet freedom last week.

As millions of us raised our voices to defend the free and open Internet, Internet operators like AT&T, Verizon, and Comcast spent millions lobbying the House of Representatives to kill Net Neutrality. A majority of the House members caved—voting for a telecommunications law that would give these companies more control over what you see and do online.

All eyes are now on the Senate, which considers Net Neutrality this month. We face a more friendly environment there, but we've got to act fast—the telecom lobbyists are working on every vote.

Can you call Rep. Duncan to express your outrage, and then call Senators William Frist and Lamar Alexander to demand support for Net Neutrality?

Here are the numbers:

Congressman John Duncan
Phone: 202-225-5435

Senator William Frist
Phone: 202-224-3344

Senator Lamar Alexander
Phone: 202-224-4944

There are many downsides to this. It would give telecom companies the ability to slow down websites of their competitors, media that they do not approve of, or of websites that do not pay them a fee. And it will kill any use of P2P software.

no. p2p = peer 2 peer

think napster, kazaa, bittorrent... or really, any free service that is in competition with any sort of pay-2-access service provided by whatever ISP (iTunes for example.. )

Think you will be free if you go with one of those smaller broadband companies? (Adelphia for example) wrong. Because all of these smaller ISPs simply rents their lines from larger ISPs.

This also has the potential for larger companies to pay the backbones to cap the speeds of competitors.

this actually goes well past the freedom of speach.

That's all just the tip of the iceberg.
Don't you know what year it is?'

1984.

Here's a site for an upcoming film that describes what's happening. http://www.freedomtofascism.com/index.html Check out the 14 minute trailer.

there was a thing on hte news tonight, cnn or something...
about att's new privacy changes,
and that they now OWN any informaiton you use on with/on their services..
as in, your personal information, any sites you visit using their internet service linkage to some articals
this is really a kick in the pants to the P2P community....

theres lawsuits all over from isohunt to thepiratebay,
every P2P site (wether informitive or a tracker or bittorrent search engine) is getting heat,
but the more they try to stop it, the worse it will get..
just a matter of time untill they start cencoring the internet.. oh wait, thats already started in china

This also has the potential for larger companies to pay the backbones to cap the speeds of competitors.

and thats where it gets scary,....

*sigh*

oh, & a good thing if you use a cable connection ...PeerGuardian,
read up, and dl hte one for your os... definalty a great utility.

(oh, and the trailer kept freezing, none of the trailers worked for me)

Well.... once again... forgive me for being stupid..... but I was kinda seeing through all that..... what little I know... more to the fact that it seems like once big entities take over, they are going to regulate what we see and access through who pays the most and who sucks whos dick. I guess what im trying to say is that I see a movement, in a bigger picture... kinda like the music industry, or anything else. It just sent a red flag up for me, and I wanted to get opinions to educate myself... not really on "current" issues, but as a philosopy as a whole, on the idea that our information highway will bicome like the news and TV nowadays in the near future? Will we be fed only what we are allowed to eat? On the only free-information highway that alows us to really "see" the world here in Americrap? Are we soo to be isolated without our consent and not even know it? Once Again? 1984. Well put. Animal Farm.

i don't think it'll be as bad as all that.

there are already encryption schemes available that neither berkley nor MIT - let alone 'captain america' - can break. things go down south, not only will they become more widely known, but someone/some group will implement a way for the aforementioned schemes to be more easily used.
