I'll let you all know how good it is

The firemen came and broke through the chimney top. And me and Mom were expecting them to pull out a dead cat or a bird. And instead they pulled out my father. He was dressed in a Santa Claus suit. He'd been climbing down the chimney... his arms loaded with presents. He was gonna surprise us. He slipped and broke his neck. He died instantly. And that's how I found out there was no Santa Claus.

Let's pretend for a minute that I'm a movie reviewer and that I have a rating that system that goes from 0 stars to 5 stars, with 5 being a movie that I feel everyone in the world will have to see in order to have a complete life.
The Notorious Bettie Page would rate about 3 1/2 on that scale. Having said that, I'm going to have to give Gretchen Mol 6 stars for her performance. Actually, everybody in it was really good, but she seriously shined. Not just at being Bettie, but just altogether, she's a phenomenal actress. The makeup people did a really good job making her look the part, but her expressiveness is what brought her portrayal to life.
The movie was really fun, and there were a lot of funny parts. There was also a lot of "Oh I didn't know that" parts, and there were two very uncomfortable parts. I won't go into what those uncomfortable parts were so as not to be accused of spoilers, but I will say that because I'm no Bettie Page expert, I wonder about the validity of both events.
My only real problem with the movie is that there was never any moment where you really "get" Bettie Page. There's nothing here that makes you have any newfound esteem for her. There's actually a certain kind of emotional detachment from her life that was kind of disappointing. It was kind of like, "Meet Bettie, here she is growing up, here she is going to New York, here she is getting in to modeling and acting, here she is getting in to bondage modeling, here she is getting saved, the end."
I was actually a bit disappointed that the movie didn't go into her getting "saved" very much at all. They presented it very quickly, and just kind of presented it as something that happened, and the movie ends pretty much immediately afterwards.
One very interesting thing about the movie that I didn't really think about until this morning is that every single character in it, is instructing her. The more I think about this, the more I think it was intentionally written this way. It's not really as if she's a naive country girl who is lead by the hand. Actually, it even seems as if because of her intelligence, people have enough respect for her to actually explain certain things to here, where with another girl they might just say, "put these boots on."
The two major exception to this... to here being instructed to do things... are her move to New York, and her being "saved" at the end. Again, I think this is intentional, to say, ultimately, it was a Bettie who was in control.
All in all it was a good movie, and I will probably rent it when it comes out, just to give it another perusal, and to listen to commentaries and that kind of thing.
If it comes to a theater in Knoxville, and you're a fan of Bettie page, I'd say it's worth it to pay full price to see it.
I think Jay was hinting that it might play at Temple, or some other event. If that's the case, don't miss it!
