the candy factory

If it's not covered by one of those other categories, you should probably talk about it here. Be nice.

BACKGROUND: The Candy Factory, an 88 year old, 80,000 square foot building located in World's Fair Park, and owned by the City of Knoxville, has provided meeting space for hundreds of community and art groups for over 20 years.

On August 16th, the City Council voted to sell the building to a private developer who intends to convert it to luxury condominiums and additional retail space.

A group calling itself 'Save the Candy Factory' was formed and has been meeting weekly for the past two months with the goal of perserving public space in the building either by preventing its sale entirely or by requiring a modification of the contract with the developer to ensure that space in the building is reserved for community use.

As the formal agreement to sell the building has not yet been finalized, and is subject to a public hearing and a final City Council vote on its redevelopment and financing, the group is planning a community rally on December 10 to garner support for its position.

Actually...

The deal is almost done...there is only one more vote...but the last one went through sooo smoothly that it is almost a 100% done deal...

The Candy Factory itself will not be closing...nor will the rent be going up...However, the top 3 floors will be the ones to be renovated into condos.

Supposedly, small shops...including an art shop are going to be in the rest of the building accompined by The Candy Factory itself. Keeping the Candy Factory in the bulding as at the request of the buyer, by the way.
"It was inappropiate and definatly hott..."

Well people can move their meetings to places at the university, or libraries, or other places....more housing for downtown is a good idea, as is more retail space...I don't know anyone that ever goes to the candy factory for anything more than chocolate anyways.
