My first Sanctus

Post by ryng »

I had fun at my first Sanctus. Wes, M,V, and C . you really made the evening worth it. Hope to see you all again soon. Wes can’t wait to see your next jacket.

Thanks to the DJ for playing NIN cover of Physical -Great to hear something NIN besides Closer.

The dance floor has the vastest personal space radius of any club I’ve ever been to. Why don’t more people dance? Is it because it’s summer? Personally I find the energy to keep dancing better when there’s a thick mass of people flailing about. I did notice that the Fallen and Mother Mo did their parts to keep the energy up.

Also thanks to the group of people who let me invade their table at Patrick Sullivan’s. Wouldn't have had to courage to go in to Sacntus alone without first meeting some people in the daylight.

I thought it was interesting that, throughout the majority of the evening, more people were standing outside socializing than were inside dancing.

Perhaps the time has finally come for which the dancefloor is not the be-all and end-all of the musical selection? Maybe we can finally admit that Sanctus is more like a big party than a "dance night"? And therefore perhaps the musical selection can increase in diversity rather than relying on hits? (I noticed that "99 Luftbaloons" and "Safety Dance" were back. I can't say that I missed them.)

It was nice to meet you! I'm glad to hear you had fun. I'd stack Sanctus up against Alchemy, Bound, and Club de Sade. I rarely make the effort to head into downtown DC for any of those events, but I never hesitate to fly down to Knoxville to hear the fantastic music and hang out with this great group of people. Hope to see you again soon!

Thanks, we had a great time hanging out with you too. I wish I had gotten to meet more people myself, but just as I predicted once I got there and saw all the people my shyness kicked in full force and I was just like. . .umm. . . .I'll just be over here. That's why I was so glad you and Mother Mo introduced yourselves to me, otherwise I probably wouldn't have met anyone new last night at all. But i still had such a blast. Oh and Mother Mo, sorry we didn't get to talk more, I would have loved to discuss astrology with you, but I had caught the dancing bug by the time we met yourself and then when I decided to get off the dance floor I couldn't find you again, perhaps because you were still on it. ;) But at least now I have a face to go with the name. I loved the fashion show, so many pretty jackets I must have. (yes, I am a Jacket whore, there's no article of clothing I like better. My roommate Vanessa keeps telling me I have too many and I keep telling her that 10 is barely out of the single digits, I need at least 10 times as many before I have enough.)

I'm not quite that much of a party-killer. :D

Actually... I haven't heard the "electronic" Bright Eyes album yet, but I bet there's some stuff on there you could get away with at Sanctus.

Sorry so long to get around to getting back on KG following this months Sanctus..... Been busy visting with mom and getting her back on the road to Colorado.
Anyway, Thanks one and all for coming out this month and joining the party. The turnout was great and all of you looked simply MARVOLOUS darlings. MAJOR HUGE Props and thanks to Wasted Potential and One Silver Hand for providing all the beautiful clothes for the fashion show, Mz Kitty for Make-Up for the models, and last but not least to all the models who helped out and strut their stuff making all the clothes look even better. I heard and got a lot of props on the show.

Was great seeing everyone out. I'm sorry If I missed saying hello to anyone, but as most of you know I get busy at Sanctus, and add the Show, and my mom being there, I was a bit tied for getting around to talk to everyone.

Lots of good stuff in the works for the upcoming months!

Oh, Yes Sanctus is a Huge party... But we DJs are still gonna cater to the dance floor. It's what we do.
;)

Now... Anyone got pictures? I forgot my camera (damn it)

Be sure to stop in to Wasted Potential and check out the store. They are getting a lot of cool stuff on top of what they had in the show, and all of One Silver Hands designs from the Fashion show are on display as well as for sale there through the month of August, when any unsold pieces are being sent back to Colorado for a Museum studio show.

But I still don't see how "catering to the dance floor" has to mean "playing the same old stuff".

I refuse to believe the goths in this town are so stubborn they'll only dance to songs they know by heart.

Because I know it isn't true. I had two dozen people dancing to Clear Horizon one time I DJ'd and I know for a fact that none of them had ever heard them before.

Sometimes you get lucky on a new song Jack, sometimes you don't. We play a lot of new music at Sanctus. Some of it catches right off the bat. Some of it falls flat on it's face. Things that catch, get added into heavy rotation and they grow, until they stop drawing a dancefloor. Then they are replaced.

We play a lot of new music, mostly at the begining of the night while people are getting their drink on, socializing and warming up to dance.
It's our test zone time for a lot of new music to see what starts to get a reaction, at a time when people are just getting into the night.
But between 11:00-2:00 you can bet that we will be hitting the regualr dancefloor packers cause thats when people are ready to dance, and we as DJs are there to provide the music & atmosphere for that. Which means make the most people happy and want to dance as you can.

People can listen to their favorite music at home on their stereo's, have their friends over, and drink a HELLUVA lot cheaper than going out to a club. They go out to clubs to be entertained, be it dancing, watching people dance, to socialize, get drunk, to show off your latest outfit, or try and hook up. We try to give them that enviroment to be able to do all the above. We can't please all the people all the time but we can try and please the majority which is what keeps the doors to the club open.
Maybe thats playing it to safe for your tastes, thats fine, Sanctus is still the longest running goth night in Knoxville's history, and it's still going strong.

If the music is a real concern to you, and you want more diversity, get there at 9 when we open up, up untill around 11 you never know what you might hear, but for most people there WILL be a lot of stuff you haven't in a LONG time if not ever before.
And, then If you REALLY wanna be UberGoth then you can say... "I was dancing to that before ANYBODY else was" when some song becomes the next "Sanctus Staple"â„¢.

Thats just how it is...

Bone is right, this is a very successful formula for Sanctus, the longetivity of the night has shown that. and the dance floor is packed during the peak hours,
if you want to hear a wider variety come early, or you can come to temple - you wont hear as many uber dance tracks, but there are people that dance and the variety you seek should be there for ya.
thats why we have choices - your opinions are taken very seriously esp when voiced - i love getting this kind of feedback - thanks for being involved and staying invoved in the scene :)

Oh, I know that Sanctus has been tending to play a lot more new music lately than they used to. I wasn't denying that, and I think it's a good thing.

I was more speaking in terms of expanding the scope of the new music that's played.
