Lawyers?

If it's not covered by one of those other categories, you should probably talk about it here. Be nice.

Post by badkiity »

Hello everyone! It seems like I'm having the
worst time finding a lawyer for an uncontested divorce. If anyone knows of a cheap lawyer, please send their number my way.It would be greatly appreciated.

Umm having been down that road before... No

The Judges don't like people representing themselves. I tried it and ended up paying about $200 more for having to go get a lawyer and go BACK to court and pay costs again, after judge denied my first attempt.

Badkitty, how much are you looking/ expecting to pay? I found that the average price for non-contested / no children divorce to be around $250-$350. If you want I can give you the name & number of the lawyer I used.

I don't know how it is in TN... but everywhere else I've lived (admittedly that only includes Florida and Toronto) you didn't need to hire a lawyer if the divorce is completely, 100% mutual and there is no legal ruling on anything financial or material needed.

Of course a lawyer won't tell you that... try poking around online, because I've known lots of people who have gotten divorced without having lawyers involved.

Legal Aid in Knoxville tunred my ex & me onto a mediation group that took care of our divorce needs. We wound up paying like $50 each, but that was over 10 years ago. Still, you might want to call & check into it.

Yeah.I called them about 6 months ago.
They have their heads up their asses. They are extremely slow about getting anything done.I call them all the time to see whats going on but its always the same old thing."We're waiting to get enough people to have another Self Help Clinic"

There is an atty in Knoxville.....think his last name is Rodolpho.....anyway, for uncontested with no children and no real property involved, he charges $250. That does NOT include the filing fee that each county has. When i can afford my divorce, he is who i plan on using. With my county's filing fee, the total cost for me is going to be around $400.

I'm not sure if you have kids or not, that makes a huge difference in paperwork. I'm doing the same (uncontested divorce w/kids) and I had Bill Nickles recommended to me by another lawyer. 579-6667. A lawyer with 666 in his number, that's a good thing i think. If he's your lawyer, and not the other guys ;)

I haven't contacted him yet, so I can't speak from direct experience, but I was told he is the man when it comes to a quick uncontested divorce.

When i was working with battered women, Legal Aid had stopped doing divorces except for in cases where documented history of domestic violence such as an order of protection was already in place. They had to do that because their case-load got overwhelming. But, that's been a couple years now, so who knows, maybe they have the funding and staff to do regular divorces again.

Also worth checking out is the UT college of Law. They have legal clinics for low income people where a final year law student assisted by a professor prepares your case for you.

Otherwise, just pick up the phonebook and start calling lawyers and asking for their price. There are several in the area that will do a non-contested for $250 - $350. i used Rebecca Slone in Jefferson City, who was in that price range.

Yep!I've called alot of lawyers in the phine book. The trouble I've been having is that they don't want to give quotes over the phone. They want you to come into the office to talk.I don't want to waste my time if they cost way to much. But I will try the UT thing.I've called Rebecca Slone but she never has called me back yet.I've heard lots of good things about her.So maybe I'll try again. ;)
