I'm Jewish. I don't work out. If god had wanted us to bend over, she would have put diamonds on the floor.

What happened to the good old days of winning a war at any cost. Seems like everyone has turned into pussies. I was watching a show the other day and it said that during WWII the British infiltrated nazi laundries and put itching powder in their clothes, also they put the powder in cases of condoms meant for the enemey. Anyway, yeah yeah yeah I know it's an historical site. But maybe it's also a geographacially superior location for operations. We are fighting a war here people political correctness needs to be laid aside.

The city declined and fell into ruin after it was conquered by the Persians under Cyrus the Great around 538 B.C.

You didn't see those Persians giving a shit about whether it might one day be a historical site, now did you?

I say we haul some more stones and brickwork out of Babylon and drop it on someone's head. Death by Babylon! Huzzah!

It doesn't matter if it's a better site geographically. You don't trash things that have that much historical importance. Ever.

This war certainly isn't worth enough to do that.
We are all atheists about most of the gods that humanity has ever believed in. Some of us just go one god further.

I'm very conservative and such. One reason why i seldom participate in political discussions on this board; however, if I didn't see the importance of it, I wouldn't have posted this.

Oh I understand the historical importance of such things and I respect them. However, I value the safety of our troops even more. Those guys are in that location for a reason.

This line of thought is exactly why what occurred on 9/11 was easily rationalized by those who perpetrated it. We may call it a terrorist attack, but it was a nearly perfectly executed tactical victory for certain enemies of america. It remains to be seen whether the strategic goals of the organizations involved are achieved through that one spectacular act of violence.
I have had enough of winning the "war" whichever one we are fighting that day/hour/minute at any cost, beit freedoms, lives, property, goodwill of former allies, or a peaceful future for our children.
When the War in Iraq was about to start, I sent a number of emails to the General who was to be in charge once ground operations were over. Basically, I stated that it was in our best interests to try and protect as much of Iraq's history as we could. The Iraqis highly value their ancient past and their ancestors' role in creating civilization as we know it. It gives them a great deal of pride to have this connection and ruins like Babylon are a visible reminder of that glorious past. Protecting them shows the Iraqi people that we value their past and so can help them build a future where they will have a prominent role again.
To destroy parts of that past for tactical reasons, may be fine for that one day, but at the cost of strategic goals that are in our best interest for years to come is Folly, plain and simple.
