POLL/PROPOSAL: Kill the "Music", "Film"
POLL/PROPOSAL: Kill the "Music", "Film"
Since almost no one at all ever uses the Music, Film, and Kitchen forums, why not get rid of them and let people discuss those in General? I really think it would make sense, and would definitely encourage more good conversation.

Dude, I am so not being a Forum Nazi. I'm just suggestin' something that would make the General forum more interesting. Why isn't discussion of music on-topic for a "Gothic" website, since music an huge part of the Gothic subculture? I'm just saying, for people who don't have time to check every single forum, it would be a lot easier. Dontcha think?

See, you're just proving my point for me, here. There's a lot of stuff talked about in General that I don't care for, but I don't think it all needs separate forums.
Regardless of the "Film" and "Kitchen" forums - there really is just no point to having a separate music forum. We all listen to music. We all dance to it, we all have favorite bands, proper music selection is apparently the very most important thing at Goth Nights, so simply explain to me why discussion of music, done politely, isn't on-topic for a "General" forum?
I mean, hey, why isn't the "Sanctus Request" thread posted in the Music forum, if music is supposed to stay there?
Let me be clear - I totally agree that, if the General forum was really busy and had tons of posts being made every day, and the Music forum was ever used (go look - there are like 6 total posts in the whole thing) - if both things things were true, I wouldn't have suggested this at all.
But given:
A) The General forum is not overflowing with posts, and
B) The Music forum is almost entirely unused,
doesn't seem like it would improve the board to merge them, at least until so much music talk broke out that the forum needed to be re-instated?

Why clutter up the General any more than it already is.
Extra rooms are useful if only for storage to find what you are looking for when looking for somthing more specific.
Like recipies, restaurant reviews, in the kitchen
Band and venue reviews in music (like I just posted today)
Ever try to find somthing old in the General room?....Nigh unto impossible if it is not being currently discussed.
Also, once a thread falls off the first page it just sinks deeper and deeper into the General Abyss
.......and perhaps not EVERYONE uses the other rooms but some people do.
Kinda like the bathrooms at Fairbanks, not everone uses them, and some people use them for purposes for which they were not intended......(I mean like being able to talk without shouting.....and other stuff)
But boy you sure would miss-em if they were gone!

But that's what I'm saying - the General forum isn't all cluttered up. As far as message boards go, our General forum is pretty darn slow-moving. I would bet you $1.80 that allowing music talk in the General forum would not significantly harm anything in any way whatsoever, and in fact, would help the General forum because it would stimulate more and more diverse conversation.
I see the General forum as the online social hangout, much like 11th Street. Now, when you guys go to 11th Street, do you decide whether you want to sit at the General Table, the Music Table, the Film Table, or the Dumpster table?

I have it on good authority that any table I sit down at becomes the Dumpster table.

Those forums serve specific purposes. They are not really discussion forums, they are review forums.
Music discussion should take place in General. Music reviews should be posted to the Music and Bands forum.
The Kitchen's primary purpose is for posting recipies.
These things are all the sort of thing that should be accessable for reference use, and merging them into General would make it far more difficult to use them as reference sources.

Astrology does not belong in GothGeek.
I don't need to clean out the space.

i'll have to agree with jack (and not just because he's jack)
it does seem that the general forum is a lot slower since it's been switched to the new format. probably because of the chat...but it would be nice not to have to look through all the other forums to find music talk or whatnot. it seems to be the trend these days for any forum to have ten million subsections, and it's a bit overwhelming if you don't have a lot of time to look through everything. besides, with the small number of posts those subsections get, it's not like it would add so much more post volume to general. but, for now, buttercup brings up a good point with the 'posts since last visit' advice. ohwell.

You do bring up a good point about though....the chat is one of the more significant reasons for the traffic being slower in General.
I participate in three forums now (Nashville, Knoxville and Fetish) and all three have chats and much of the fluffyer conversations (like DIV's rock talk) tend to disappear into the aether there.

OK. Then why was my "What 5 Albums are you listening to?" thread moved to the Music Review section?
And who added the option to my poll that says "Who Cares?" Do we not own our own posts anymore?
