court

If it's not covered by one of those other categories, you should probably talk about it here. Be nice.

court

Post by karmakaze »

shit shit shit shit

I was getting ready to pay off a speeding ticket tomorrow.

I got a speeding ticket on Nov 15th.
I thought the court date was Dec 23rd.
I just notice that it said Nov 23rd.

So i have missed court date.
which was only 8 days after i got the ticket?
I am hoping it was a mistake.

Anyone know what will happen to me if it isn't?

There should be a telephone number on the back of your ticket for the courthouse. I would call the courthouse and talked to them. Being a ticket queen, I believe all that will happen is that you will have to pay a late fee.

it was quite possibly a mistake- I've had that happen before (cop said July, wrote June, threw me into a panic when I found it after the date written which was wrong)- dates are usually a bit later than 8 days after the ticket. The people at the courthouse have undoubtedly dealt with that before- the absolute, direst worst that has happened is that there is a bench warrant out for you which will be cancelled if you go up and pay the fine. I think you have to be REALLY delinquent for that to happen- more than a week. If you go up tomorrow, explain what happened, they should be able to deal with it. (mine was done in ten minutes. smaller population, yes, but paying fines really doesn't take long.)

In other words- don't panic. This is a far cry from a dire situation, it can probably be cleared up in an hour or less.
Don't listen to that guy! He's gonna lead you down the path of righteousness. I'm gonna lead you down the path that rocks!

it probably is a mistake
i've had cops write the wrong infraction code on the ticket
saying i would have to make a court apperance regardless
however all i had to do was pay a fine and be done with it
i'd rather be your enemy than hear you call me friend

If It was the Right Court date they will have a warrant out for you and at some point they will come pick you up and have you go in to the jail office where you will get to plead your case for about 5 seconds you will have to spend a couple hours in jail and then they will set your bond (it will not be much) then you will get out and they will give you another court date. This being the most that can happen.
And they said that the dead can't speak

If the officer writes the wrong violation, or writes the date of the ticket as the wrong date - take it to court. It will get thrown out. No fines, no court costs. If you are written a ticket for speeding and you ran a red light - well, you weren't speeding, were you? Same applies to the dates (and location too) if you got a ticket on the 1st of december and the cop writes the ticket date as the 30th of November... You weren't there on that day - and it won't match the officers logbook. Paperwork mistakes are an easy way out of a ticket, but 99% of people just pay them.

Now the case under discussion is different. If the officer writes the wrong court date - the only thing you can hope for is to show up to court on the day he wrote and the officer not be there because he wasn't scheduled to be. If the officer (the only witness to the violation) isn't in court to testify... the ticket gets thrown out. No witness, no ticket.
