This just came from the Louisville, KY group.

Because there's only so much that can be done to try to make over these leather-skinned bottle blondes that are so pervasive in society today. To keep from having to run, essentially, the same show over and over where only the name of the bimbo changes they're forced to seek out fresh blood - so to speak.
And goth chicks are just hot. Everyone knows that...

Well, sadly people still judge by appearances, and thats ok if you want to work in retail your whole life...I think I saw the preview and that girl had gauged ears which would be harder to cover up than say, you shadowdancer, dressing down however you dress at work or whatever. I doubt you wear your vinyl, y'know?
I often dress for comfort around the anthropology department, but I've been taking my septum ring out lately, just because I don't want to be judged professionally according to other peoples bias's. I'm going to be trying to get recommendations for grad school soon, and I don't want any professors thinking I'm a kid or not serious about pursuing an advanced degree...
I mean, I will never give up darker colors or funky shoes or my music, but there are a view items of youth that perhaps should be given up gracefully if you are trying to enter the non clubnight world...
Thats why I'm glad I've never made any body modifications that aren't easily covered up or hidden.

I'm definitely not going to argue with you on that one. People are very judgmental on appearances. Its a fact of life. There are reasons that I don't have my hair dyed a different color than what it is. In this day and age, when people are downsizing companies everywhere, I'm not giving them any excuse. I love what I do, and "dressing down" for it is worth it to me. That being said, however, it doesn't mean that I quit wearing mostly black, gray, burgundy and purple to work along with black nail polish and some subtle jewelry.
What struck me as sad were two things:
1.) When they were done, I didn't see a shred of her own original style left. I know that was supposed to be the point of the show, but I was disappointed that at least a very minute portion wasn't left. It was conveyed that the entire appearance was bad and that people can't exist at all in the professional world without a little bit of self expression. It continues to encourage the idea that companies want employees giving up their lives for the corporation. And THAT, is another subject that I won't continue on because it hits too personally for me as of late.
2.) The amount of plastic surgery involved really bothered me as well, but that is a personal opinion. Some people go for it; some people don't.
I'm not wicked. I'm just viciously mischievous.

That's my thoughts on it. I have no pity for them because they signed up for it. If they didn't either want the change, or at least want the publicity, they wouldn't be there. I said the same thing about that Goth house that was getting made over.

My disappointment was with the show in general, not necessarily the people who are on it. That's their choice. I certainly wouldn't do it, but if that's what someone else wants, more power to them. I certainly can't fault the one who wanted a more professional appearance to help her get a better or more professional job. There comes a time in all of our lives when we have to grow up and face reality. I just don't agree with the way the show took ALL of her "uniqueness" away. I may be jumping to conclusions based on the one episode I have now seen, but I also have a problem with plastic surgery being the immediate answer because someone appears overweight. Immediately wanting to fix someone's weight in order to make them successful for everyday society further promotes the opinion that in order for the person to be beautiful, he/she has to be thin.
Watching that show just gave me one more reason on the list of many why I don't watch television. The whole "reality" craze is getting out of hand, but as long as its keeping the attention of the masses, it doesn't appear to be ending anytime soon. The only two entertaining things to me about that show was the fact that I got to see a club on television that I was in less than a month ago and the girl with the striped dress that had the cool purple hair at the concert.
I would be curious to know a couple of things about the show. #1. Do the participants get paid anything for doing it? #2. Is there a legal contract that has to be signed before the makeover begins requiring the participant to finish the process?

The application doesn't mention anything about backing out. It does, however, state:
Without in any way limiting anything herein, I further hereby release, discharge, relinquish and hold harmless Releasees from any medical care assistance, treatment or services provided to me at any time whether such treatment or services are provided by health care professionals, paramedics, or any other person.
Which I find frightening. They basically refuse to take the blame if anything goes wrong. And then there's:
which along withI hereby waive any physician-patient privilege I may have or that may arise with any physicians, psychologists, health care providers (including both physical and mental health care providers), social workers, health care institutions, insurers, and other individuals and entities as a result of my participation in the selection process and/or the Program, and I authorize the release to Producer, ABC and Greengrass of all records and information, written, verbal, electronic or otherwise, from any of the above persons and/or entities.
andI irrevocably authorize Producer, ABC, Greengrass and their respective designees to secure information about my experiences from my current and former employers, associates, friends, family members, educational institutions, government agencies, credit reporting agencies, and any references I have provided, and I irrevocably authorize such parties to provide information concerning me. I specifically authorize investigation of my employment record, medical record, and government records, including but not limited to my motor vehicle record, civil record, criminal record and consumer report(s). I agree to execute any authorizations, consents and releases requested from me by Producer, ABC and/or Greengrass and their respective designees in connection with their investigation of me. I hereby unconditionally and irrevocably release and forever discharge all such parties and persons from any and all liabilities arising out of or in connection with any such investigation.
means you just sold your soul to Disney. They own you.I agree not to make any claim against Releasees as a result of the recording or use of my Likeness and/or the Materials (including, without limitation, any claim that such use invades any right of privacy and/or publicity). I understand that I will not be paid any money for giving Releasees these rights, or for signing this agreement.

Good questions. I'd like to know the answers to those well. My statement was based more on the fact that some people seem to feel sorry for the person doing it. I really don't agree with the whole concept either but I won't feel sorry for people who choose to actively participate.

This is just another case of a damn good contract that you need an attorney for. Maybe she was thinking that the work done on her would help proffessional life and would make people think twice about her regardless of clothing. If you take someone who is attractive and put them in club clothes, they are still thesame person , only gothed up. If you put them in bussiness casual they are still the same person, just more likely to be hired. This is just low self esteem taking over and making them sell their soul. That doesn't mean that they should or shoulden't be felt sorry for (as if that does anything). it means that they made a choice and now they have to stick with it, much like a tattoo of mickey mouse.

i was unfortunate enough to catch a glimpse of that episode....ack! and i had to change the channel when they started on the next one with all the sucking the fat and suck... really falls into the disgusting category in my book... if you want to change, i really think exercising and natural methods are the way to do it... unless it's for medical reasons, don't let others go poking about in your body
"Why do you kill?"
A good article about this: http://www.bmezine.com/news/pubring/20041008.html
I really dislike excessive plastic surgury. I don't care if that person was "goth or not." I don't care about any of the whatever else issues any of the people on these shows have. The fact is, if you desire major changes with your body, there is a mental issue of self-esteem there, which cannot be cured by physical means. It may even worsen it.
And, more specifically on that show (as well as "renovate my family") I liked the "before" much better than the "after." But of course I'm biased...
