What's your definition.....
of Goth....??? Some people say "depressed people" and others say "anyone who listens to goth music".....what's your opinion? I've had plenty of my friends at school ask me repeatedly this last year ,and I just wanted to know what I can tell them next month when they undoubtably do it again....
What decides wether a person is Goth or not?

ok
You're looking at "goth" from the stand point of trend. View it as lifestyle. It's not about what you wear, or the music you listen to, but who you are. It's more of a mindset. All of the people here in KG are very different, but the one thing we have in common is that we're ok with everyone being different, and we're all openminded enough to accept the unique qualities and individualities that make each person special. It is true that for the most part we all enjoy similar fashions, genres of music, and entertainment, but it's about much more than that.
As for your friends, let them know that being goth isn't just the outside, but the inside as well.
good luck

Wow. I have heard this dreaded question asked and argued so many times, never ending with a clear answer. But amazongoddess, that's the most awesome and intelligent answer I've ever heard. Congrats.
Snap Dragon and chsgothbabe09: Ya'll are both late middle school, right? Maybe freshmen? This period sucks. (I was there a few years ago, probably still recovering, lol.) You are starting to get an idea of who you really are and want to be, but are also faced with the opinions of peers which can get in the way. And I could just tell you to ignore it, but you know that is too hard to do. If you call yourself a goth, you must have an idea of what it is. And while your idea may be different from everyone else's, it's the one that matters (or should matter) to you. Maybe there's a general definition, dunno, but there's definitely a general stereotype. Your peers already know this and know you fit it, or they wouldn't be asking you. So don't tell them what they already know, tell them what it means to you, personally. If they can't accept it, just dismiss it as closemindedness. Most of them will grow up eventually. Hope that was helpful, good luck!
...And sorry for sounding so serious. I'm really easygoing and bouncy, but sometimes I'll just get on a roll.

What decides wether a person is Goth or not?
I warned her what it would start to ask this, but it's educational for these young uns, so... let her fly!
Basically, my young lady here has grown up with a "goth" Mommy & Step Dad, so she & her little brother reflect our family's freaky ways in their dress & interests. This is a little ahead of the rest of the school yard's range of experience, so they frequently get the typical questions of, "Do you believe in God?" or "Are you depressed?"
My way of dealing with it is to try & patiently explain who I am, & what I feel about the various topics they may be questioning me about. But, when I was in school, there was no such thing as "goth." We were hoods if we wore black, hippies if we listened to alternative, & geeks if we read too much. These days, labels have changed a bit. Perhaps some of the later teens & twenties on the board can give more timely advice from their more recent experiences?
I say just shrug & say, "I'm a freak, but a friendly freak. How about you?"

Change how you see, not how you look.

Very good points made here. I myself never claimed to be anything but, me. Some said/say I'm Goth, Some said/say Metalhead,punk,whatever.... I never really cared what people called me.
If someone wants to pick on you and make fun of you being "Goth", chances are they would of made fun of you if you were not "Goth". The people who start crap with other people do it to everyone....call it jealousy, penis envy,whatever....just don't listen to them and you'll be OK. If these are the people you want to like you, I suggest you reanalyse that.
Bottom line....people suck. We all are pricks to someone eventually for no reason or for a petty reason, hence, why we suck. Can't we just all get along? No. Sorry it won't happen.

Yes, I have wished you were dead. You are just another face in the crowd, someone who brings me suffering, someone I truely hate.

Vachy, the reason I have such a grasp on the "goth" way of life, is because of my psychology degree. Some of my courses required me to analyze my own life and personal ideals an beliefs. I had to come up with ways to defend them to others and to concrete them for myself. More or less, I had one particular professor that wanted to make sure I didn't have any faulty ideals. It worked, cause now I know exactly why I am me. Good stuff.

Hmmm. An English teacher advised me to take psychology, and I thought that maybe I would. But then I found out the degree I want requires it, so... It sounds like an interesting class. I'll only get a little since I'll only take it once, but I still look forward to it.
Ya know, I really couldn't tell you *why* I believe the things that I do. It might be kinda scary to find out. I'm afraid I'll find out that maybe I don't really believe them. I recently lost the religious belief I have had all of my life. I feel kinda lost now. I don't want to feel like that about everything that makes me who I am. But you seem to have had a positive experience, which makes me a little less worried. Thanks for sharing.

Label free is the way to be!!
~looks at his labeless body~
~looks at everyone else who labels themselves and starts trying to peel the labels off and switch them with other labels~
No matter how you slice it, or how you look at it, we're all the same in a few ways. We all are human(Hard to tell for some) We all think a certain way. And we all have things that are different.
Labels are for jars. Not for people.

I was raised Fundamental Baptist and still follow many of the beliefs, but i've taken many of the other religions of encountered over the years and pulled what applies to me and what I agree with, to kind of create a set of beliefs and ideals that I can live with. I guess I realized that I'm the only one thats gonna have to suffer through my beliefs and so I better make sure they're gonna work for me. Then I shed the labels, decided there is no label for my beliefs since I pull from so many, and I accept no labels. The only labels I have come in the form of my tats.
Vachy, as for the psych class, I suggest taking more than one, just for the sake of self knowledge and being able to psychoanalyze those around you. It makes it very easy to understand why people around you are the way they are. Have fun though. As for the self realizations, it really depends on the class and the professor.

Goth just ... is.
As always, short, sweet, and to the point. Fallen, dear, you're one of a kind.
Vachy, I completely understand the $$ problem, that's why I looked into grants and loans. My college was completely paid for by the govt and they even gave me $$ to live on. It can be done, even if you live at home. Look into it.
