hello and a few questions

Post by dimethylsea »

Greetings all,
I'm Brian and I will be moving to Knoxville for school soon.
Sometime in the fall, to settle in for class in spring.
I'm presently out in VA, and we bounce betwixt the Hampton
Roads scene and the great goth-axis that is DC/Baltimore.
Anyway I'm planning to get my ass back in class
after a LOOOONG hiatus and I'd appreciate pointers on where
to look for a place (a rental, preferably in a campy/weird section
of town, near the Uni, till I can find some place far far out in
the country with some woods :) Any suggestions as to
neighborhoods?
Also is the parking situation around UT as bad as I've been
led to believe? (This bears on commuting in from outside
the county line....)
I should be hitting Knoxville in a few months to begin
reconnoitering.. so please share... and I'll make sure my visit
coincides with a Sanctus weekend....

I've noticed parking has gotten slightly better since they finished the 11th street parking garage...but of course, it is generally better in the spring than in the fall.

I commute out of county everyday and I didn't have many problems parking this semester. However, it can sometimes be absolute fucking hell, paying 150 a year for a parking pass and not being able to find a friggin' space....

You learn to appreciate the bumper stickers that say "If you see my professor, tell them I'm looking for a parking space-The University of Tennessee" or something like that.

Anyways, I'm about 103 hours into my B.A. in anthropology...shout if you need anything regarding UT.

And you can't get closer or odder than the fort. It is a bizarre little neighborhood filled with all sorts of bizarre people, coffee shops, beautiful victorian houses that are mysteriously afflicted by fire, and sadly, more and more crack heads and criminals move there al the time. There is always something going on, and always someones car getting jacked. It has its pros and cons.

If I had to pick, I'd move into the Fourth and Gill neighborhood over the Fort.

Also, if you are a freshman, you have to live on campus your first year I believe...

Fourth and Gill eh? I'll definitely be looking into this area.
I'll be a post-Bacc. student (I don't have the science labs to
go to grad school, so it's one step backward to make three
forward), so living in the dorms is QUITE out of the question :)

Thanks for the helpful hint...

How far out of county is your commute.. and how long? Are you
able to schedule your class times outside rush hours for the
most part?

Ideally I may wind up renting something small near the U and
building out in Grangier (so I'm between Knoxville and the
Tri-Cities). Is commuting from .. oh say central Grangier,
Hamblen or Jefferson.. reasonable? (if you have any helpful
hints on these areas feel free to share please!)
I know we just plan on 1 to 1.5 hours in the MD/DC/NoVA
area.. period. The Roads area is almost as bad with the tunnels
carving everything up.

Ch33rs!
Yes, I have wished you were dead. You are just another face in the crowd, someone who brings me suffering, someone I truely hate.
