I'm fuming, and couldn't bother with finding the gay marriage thread, so I thought that I would just post here. Defense of Marriage Act? For the 3rd time this week, I have heard someone speak up on NPR defending the sanctity of marriage using the same argument - Marriage between a man and a woman is unique and must be protected because it provides a public service. What might that be, keeping divorce lawyers in business? No you big silly, only a man and a woman can produce a child. Is this the same logic behind the catholic church's ban on contraception, or right to lifers assertions that every fetus has a place on earth, wanted or not? Is there some population problem that I am unaware of? Because, see, I thought that the problem was that there were too many people in the world - overpopulation, not underpopulation. I guess that I was wrong. Fucking christian logic...Sorry, but I am angry and frustrated.
So gay marriages will not be able to provide the public service of creating new life. Do you think that maybe, just maybe, those couples that cannot have children of their own might adopt one or two of the millions of children in need of adoption? I wonder if there is a precedent for that? Do straight couples who cannot have children of their own adopt? Of course they do. Is that a public service? Yes, and a very "christian" thing to do too, I might add. So by adding gay couples to their ranks don't you think that maybe more children will be adopted into loving households? I guess not, because god forbid they might get raised queer
Sorry, had to get that off my chest.
