dead roses
Let me be the first to post an idea. Sorry, I don't have a digital camera or scanner, so I can't post a pic.
I took a rose from the wreath on my gramma's casket. I let it dry really good(have to hang it upside-down for this). Then I took an old picture frame, added a mat, and a lighter, plain back. Then I simply mounted the rose, still hanging upside-down, in the center of the mat.
I think it was a great way to preserve something that is special to me and at the same time looking very "gothy".

I'm Jewish. I don't work out. If god had wanted us to bend over, she would have put diamonds on the floor.

Hmm..I don't know what could protect the flower from dust..hairspray may help it from falling apart, but aside from making a shadow box, dust will find its way to it..
If I have time I'll glance in one of my flower drying books and see what comes up...
I knew of a lady once that went around and picked a bunch of flowers of a fresh tomb, dried them, mixed them, added fragrance and gave a pretty glass container with the potpourri inside to the relatives of the deceased..I thought that was a nice idea..

What you want is spray polyurethane. They have matt, and satin and gloss. Im guessing you want matt (not shiny). Be in a well ventilated area, and _lightly_ spray several coats. When I mean light, I mean dusting. If you go to heavy, you'll soon have a gunk covered dried rose. Practice with something else first, to get an idea.
I made something like this for an ex once. Ruined lots of roses because it was to thick of a covering.

it's a list of products, but the second one down looks like something that might be useful if you haven't already gone the spray polyurethane route.

Another thing for those of us who's boyfriends go a little overboard with the flowers. We can't save ALL the roses our boys send us.. they would take over the house!
What I do is pull a couple of petals from each flower and dry them high on a dark closet shelf. Then I put them in a nice BIG vase. It makes a kind of sentimental potpouri. And you can do this for all kinds of flowers.. not just your roses.

May your dreams be the future you could have had, and your nightmares be the realization that you destroyed your chance to make it reality.
