Guess what I did today!

If it's not covered by one of those other categories, you should probably talk about it here. Be nice.

Guess what I did today!

Post by faeriegirl »

I went to the local mall (before opening to walk in a climate controlled area) and the bookstore opened as I walked by....

So, I went in and signed up. For what? you ask?

Why, the new volume of Harry Potter, $29.95 hardcover, coming out on June 21, 2003.

Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix Volume V

Oh, yeah, babeeeeeeeeee :)

This new book is going to be 900 pages long. No joke! And in hardcover, I could see it being that expensive.

I've read through the first two books right before the first movie came out. I've been meaning to read the others.

If it encourages kids to put down the nintendo and pick up a book, it's wonderful.

Oh, don't misunderstand me - I completely support anyone who can spending the money to buy new books - used books are great but they don't feed writers.

I just hate her for having that kind of disposable income - simple jealousy - that's all.

Actually, the conversation at the bookstore went something like this:

me - "I would like to reserve a copy of the new Harry Potter book, please. Wow, I'm excited about the release, I thought it was coming out last year. When is it coming out?" (thats me trying to make small talk while she types in her computer admist piles of 'The Real Reason for Easter type books)
"Do I need to pay for that up front?" (no cash in my pocket, of course)

bookstore lady (BL for short) - "No, you can pay when the book comes in. It will be out on June 21st. The cost is $29.95 plus tax. What is your phone number?"
me - "did you say $29.95? Well, that's ok right now, but I hope it's still ok in June. Maybe I should get a job, huh? Wonder if my boyfriend will pay for this?" (still trying to break the icy exterior of this literally holier than thou lady who only sells bible paraphenalia on a daily basis)
me - "its xxx..."
BL - "is that XXX area code?"
me - "yes"
BL - "What was that number again?" (duh, I didn't give it to you yet)
me - "xxx-0xxx"
BL - "did you say xxx-2xxx?"
me - " zero, sorry, I say zero instead of oh. Oh is a letter, zero is a number."
BL - "Hrmph. Yes, Well.... "(her, perturbed with me for clarifying)
me - "do you need anything else?"
BL - "No, we will call you when the book is in."

No thank you, no have a nice day... nothing.

LOL the way I see it, I earned it.

But you can borrow it if ya want, JaNell!
(so can you Erin;))

JaNell (hey look, i can shift :P ), if you hate that someone can spend 30 dollars on a book, you'd just adore the amount of cash i've sunk into programming tomes.

I have a 3-track German DJ-only promo single I plunked down $43 for. I'm lucky to have gotten it at that price. The time prior when I saw it on eBay, my $85 bid was topped.

That that!

Actually I recall a shirt they used to sell at Downtown Books & News in Nasvhille. can't remember the words exactly but it went something along the lines "I would rather have books then eat."

Now the way I see it you can take this setiment and actually work in into someting feasible. Buy Baloney, Macaroni and Cheese, cheap fronzen pizza, some vitamen supliments and bang you have left over book money. Of cource this works a lot better if your single.

But on the topic of goodies bought today I have.

The Nina EP by ShadowWax...six dollars....so far a good little thing. Reminds me a lot of Creed in spots. Very straight forward modern rock. Where you were best track so far.

William Burroughs: El Hombre Invisibe A portrait by Barry Miles. Ten Dollars Burroughs is actually my least favorite beat writer. His cut and paste/stream of thought phrases sound pretty good until you have to read a chapter of them. Still i have a interest in the lives of the beats...Burroughs, Ginsberg, and Kerouac in paticular...and Burroughs comes across as the more interesting one to read about. Paranoia, a desire to break language, a keen intellect, and a open drug policy it all makes for interesting reading.

Cheap Thrills by Big Brother and the Holding Company Ten Dollars...I'm rebuilding my music collection. See for the longest time I didn't have a CD player. I think my first one was in 1996 and that was my computer. Anyway I have bunches of stuff on Tape that I need to rebuy on cd. My Janis Joplin collection is getting a bit priority. Lucky too that they have been reissued to include new tracks and better sound. Holds Summertime, Piece of my Heart, and Ball and Chain. among my favorites.

But right behind the CD version was a SACD version meaning of cource that in ten years I'll have to start to process all over again.

Or, save the money you would have spent by simply avoiding the scarier club nites. :)

Luckily, 80's night is free if you go before 10...
Cheap pizza? That's a treat! Think more along the "dried beans" and "look, honey, I was able to get canned goods because they're 2 for a dollar" line.

Oh my god, aren't they great! Big Brother and the Holding Co. are an amazing band. So much fun to turn the stereo all the way up and just sit there and let it wash all over you.

Erasmus said it the best-

When I have money, I buy books. If I have any left over, I buy food and clothing.

Gotta love that Erasmus.
