Well, they were one of the first. Looking forward to seeing Neubauten in Asheville on the 16th.
"Industrial" music as a genre began with the formation of Throbbing Gristle in late 1975. Genesis P. Orridge invented the term/genre. The genre took its name from the label that Throbbing Gristle set up, Industrial Records.

Yes !!!! you know your stuff mate!
ZYKLON B ZOMBIE!!!!
Have you seen what he looks like lately god it is mental!!!
Don't know that all these are really "genres" but here are the general types of music I most avidly collect:
Storytellers: Generally singer/songwriters who sing songs that tell an imaginative tale. These are the guys - and they are usually guys - that can hook me with just guitar or piano. Artists include Nick Cave, Tom Waits, Johnny Cash, and Leonard Cohen. Recommended albums by each include Murder Ballads by Nicky, Frank's Wild Years by Tom Waits, the American Recordings by Johnny Cash, and I'm Your Man by Leonard Cohen.
80's punk: I went to high school in the 80's, but did not really get into good music until I accidentally discovered punk in my senior year when I mistakenly thought that the Cramps, Bad Music for Bad People, was a heavy metal album. After that it was Black Flag, Minutemen, Bad Brains, Dead Kennedys all the way. Favorite bands include Big Black, Dead Kennedys, and the Ramones. Recommended albums by each include Songs About Fucking by Big Black, Frankenchrist by Dead Kennedys, anything by the Ramones, but for value get a Ramones "best of."
80's Gothic: This is really the only period of gothic music that really means anything to me, the "old school" I guess. Favorite bands include Virgin Prunes, Fields of the Nephilim, Sisters of Mercy. Recommended albums by each artist include If I Die I Die by Virgin Prunes, Dawnrazor by Fields of the Nephilim, and Floodland by Sisters of Mercy.
World Serpent Music: Don't really know how to classify this. World Serpent Distribution is a label out of London which worked with all of the most amazing bands from London's psychedelic / experimental / apocalyptic folk roster. At one time, they released nearly all of the music from Coil, Nurse With Wound, Current 93, Death In June and Sol Invictus, among many others. These are all my favorite bands of all time and recommended albums include the recent 2 volume Musick to Play in the Dark by Coil, An Awkward Pause by Nurse With Wound, Thunder Perfect Mind and Dog's Blood Rising by Current 93, Roseclouds of Holocaust by Death in June, and Let Us Prey by Sol Invictus.
Others: Well, these are bands that I am not sure where to put them, but always seem to fall together when I'm making playlists, along with a recommended album:
Psychic TV - Allegory and Self
Swans - Greed Holy Money
Foetus - Hole
Einsturzende Neubauten - Tabula Rasa, Halber Mensch
Shinjuku Thief - The Witch Hunter Trilogy
Laibach - Nova Akropola
Diamanda Galas - Plague Mass
