Alternative Karaoke Night
Some of you may remember having karaoke at the Giant Panda and Ivy's and it wasn't infested with the next Faith Hill or Toby Keith wannabes. It was fun because you heard people do entertaining songs without having to sit through country crap. I was in Nashville for a while and found a dive called Springwater that did karaoke on Tuesday nights. The place is an indies/punk bar. Karaoke there was a lot of fun. Most fun I think I've ever had at karaoke. You can go from 9pm to 2am and not hear a single country song. They were doing tunes from the early 90's, 80's, and 70'. People were having fun too. I saw a couple slam dance against each other while singing Human League's "Don't You want Me Baby", a 60 year old man do tunes in a Leonard Cohen style voice and humping and dancing with pink-haired girls. He was also humping the wall and he would do tunes such as "Thunderball" by Tom Jones or "Wheel in the Sky" by Journey. A guy came out with a skull mask and a spiked shoulder-pads and sang some Motley Crue. It was pretty insane, but a blast and I wished, man it be nice if Knoxville had a karaoke venue like this without the prima donnas or the next country idol.
Why not try to start one? Many of you might remember Baker, but he owns a karaoke/DJ business which used to be Music Matters that did the Giant Panda and Buffalo Wild Wings. He's been trying to start up an active karaoke night at a place called Roger's for the last few weeks but it's been pretty dead. He and his buddies are pretty much the only ones doing any singing. I'm thinking let's take on this night and make it an alternative karaoke night. Other venues have the college preps or the countrykins. I think this place would be open for that, the bartender there reminds of me Simon Gallup of the Cure with tattoos. The owner is also a young person in his twenties.
I'll be there tonight. Karaoke at Roger's, in Ten Mile Center on Kingston Pike across from the Mazda dealership in between Cedar Bluff and Walker Springs. Thursday nights - 9pm to 1am.

not to burst anyone's bubble, but when i started Skareoke, the scene was more ...well...active than it is right now.
At Ivey's we pulled pretty much a constant 30 or so, minus nights it snowed like mad and all that jazz. When they tried to do it at the Panda, it started with like the same group, then dwindled to the same 5 or 10 people, doing the same 5 or 10 songs, and it died slowly.
Point is, at the first point, there was weekly nights, monthly nights, and it was the..pardon the pun...OG crowd. I personally don't go out anymore, but its not cus of any politcal reasons, but simply i don't know anyone at all.....All of the people that made the kareoke nights work, don't do anything anymore...or at least on a semi regular basis, hell, people don't even post stuff up here anymore.
Not to be the big grey angry cloud that says you can't do it...but i just don't think it would work out. Here's to you for making an effort tho.

I'm a big bright shining star......
Thursday night was very entertaining. Where else in town are you going to hear Danzig, Slayer, Rammstein and Love & Rockets done for karaoke in one sitting? There were other stuff to like STP, A-ha, Live, Culture Club etc. All in all fun stuff to hear. More importantly, no country, with the exception of Johnny Cash and that doesn't count towards lame-ass country crap.
Oh, they do have the Megatouch 2005 crackbox there. Also an ancient crackbox from the late 90's. As well, there's a stand-up arcade machine of X-men vs. Street Fighter.
But it was fun just hanging out and talking with others.

If you got off at Walker Springs, you'd turn right, so north of the mall. Its on the stretch of road between N/S peters road and walker springs. Its a pretty tiny place.gothic_spleen wrote:thats great....where the hell is it....i know kingston pike, but is it north of west town mall or south of west town mall?
