Memphis

Post by ms.tangledwebs »

Well, Barry has done his time in school and has now landed a job very close to his dream job. The down side to this is that we will now be moving. So, what does anyone know about Memphis, I really don't care to hear any of the bad stuff, because we are moving either way, but let me know if you know any good places to go, or stuff we should check out. Thanks for your input and I will miss you all!!

There is a zoo there, which I have not seen, but if you get a membership to their zoo when you come back to Knox you can go to the zoo here for free. They also particpate with other zoos around the country, so, if you like that sort of thing its alot of fun.

The Memphis zoo is pretty kick-ass. When we lived in W. TN., I took the midgets there quite often.

There is nothing to do, and nothing to see here. Rednecks and racism abound. There aren't any good clubs (at least by my definition of good). The "goth" scene is Hot Topic. The rave scene has been all but driven out by the christian right and the cops. Now if you want gangster rap and shootings, we've got lots of those. A kid got his head blown off in my front yard a few weeks ago - and I live in a "nice" area. Needless to say, I'm moving.

ms.tangledwebs, what part of town you moving to?

I know better than that, my brother has lived there for at least 8 years and there is plenty to keep him entertained, course he isn't one to go out partying all the time, but neither am I
div wrote:Rednecks and racism abound.

How is that any different from here?
div wrote:There aren't any good clubs (at least by my definition of good).

We may define good differently, I had a blast at the after reception party at my brother's first wedding, course I think it is the people who make a good club... not the place itself (tho that can affect it)
div wrote:The "goth" scene is Hot Topic.

Yeah, I am not exactly into goth as much as I am the people I have met here, so that really doesn't matter to me
div wrote:The rave scene has been all but driven out by the christian right and the cops.

Never been to a rave, not my style nor interest from what I know of them.
div wrote:Now if you want gangster rap and shootings, we've got lots of those. A kid got his head blown off in my front yard a few weeks ago - and I live in a "nice" area.

I am afraid to say that those things abound no matter where you go nowadays
div wrote:ms.tangledwebs, what part of town you moving to?

we are looking to get a place in Cordova, I kinda know the area, plus it is close to the school I want my daughter in and Ballet Memphis is based out of there.

Lastly, thanks for the comments, but did you notice where I said in my orriginal post

I'll try to keep my negative opinion of the city out of it... ;) and of course, when i say there's nothing to do or see - you have to remember that i go to chicago and new orleans several times a year.... in comparison, Memphis is pretty dull.
I currently live about a mile west of Cordova. Cordova itself is pretty nice, but it has one big downside if you're looking to buy a house there. It's not incorporated, and it's all being annexed by the city. Which means the property taxes will more than double. Currently the schools there are shelby county ran - which is a good thing. County schools are much better ran than the city ones. If you're going to be renting the taxes thing isn't a big deal - but it's why I'm not moving to Cordova. The only cities in the county that are incorporated are Bartlett, Germantown, and Collierville. The Germantown\Collierville area is literally one of the richest ares in this part of the country. I'm moving to Bartlett - which, while not as rich as Germantown, is pretty nice.
Tips\Comments:
NEVER speed in either Bartlett or Germantown. I know several people who have gotten tickets for 2-3 miles over the speed limit, and both cities have hefty speeding fines compared to the rest of the county.

If at all possible, do not drive south of Knight Arnold. Memphis drivers are bad to begin with, but south of Knight Arnold they become just plain insane, and usually don't have insurance to boot.

It is almost impossible to drive more than 3 miles on a given major road without seeing at least one movie theater. 99% are owned by Malco. http://www.malco.com - There's a Muvico downtown, in the Peabody place mall - 22 screens including a giant 60ft tall screen - well worth the drive for good movies.

I hate to say it, and I know you didn't want to hear it, but being honest is what I am...

I have never heard of memphis as referred to as anything less than a cesspool by those who have lived there.

I don't know if a dreamjob is worth what you'd have to deal with living there....*shrug*

Are dream jobs available anywhere else? ;)

The good news is, you can always come back if it is as bad as I've heard, we'll throw you a welcome home party...:)

Thank you and I understand being dull in comparison, but the most I really do is hang out at home with my babygirl and occasionally shop.... so.....

My brother is moving from Cordova (better job opportunity elsewhere for him) and he gave it a thumbs up, tho his wife did warn about the schools in the near future. We are just renting for now, and when we buy we will probably go Germantown (that is where my brother used to live with his first wife)

I have already found a school for Gwynn to attend, it is a private catholic school, so that won't be an issue.

Yeah, I haven't heard great things either, but when you have been living on a graduate student's income for over 3 years, been looking for a job for over a year and then get an offer which will make your annual take home pay double what your gross income was previously..... then, yeah, it is worth it. Plus my family lives less than 3 hours up river of Memphis (which is 4 hours closer than they are now) so that is a big draw for me.
Buttercup wrote:Are dream jobs available anywhere else?

Not that we could find. At this point Barry has 8 years of school under his belt and no experience, which is what everyone seems to want.
Buttercup wrote:The good news is, you can always come back if it is as bad as I've heard, we'll throw you a welcome home party...

lol, true, and thanks, the truth is I may actually make it out more often once we move, we will have family close enough to come keep Gwynn for a few days and Barry will be on a regular schedule, so we can actually make plans.

alright, that covers one outing a month for 5 months (not counting Beale street, cause that will be a regular thing)

I will definately be checking it out soon after arrival, and you had better come visit and hit Beale with me!!

I will miss you all too, tho I rarely see anyone anyway, and you are welcome to come visit (I plan to have beds for at least 4 extra people in the house)

I will visit and I will tell you when Gwynn gets her first tattoo, if Barry doesn't kill me for it first, lol.

Guess that is all for now, THanks for the input!
