Ichi The Killer
Does anyone have this movie or know where I can get a relatively cheap copy of the DVD? I saw part of it at a friend's house once, but I had to run and couldn't finish it.Said friend has since moved away and I can't find it anywhere.
When I die, put that bottle in my hand
all these years on earth it was my only friend

I don't loan out movies, but I do believe I have seen a copy at Best Buy before for under 20.00. Well worth it as the movie is great fun. If you are not in a hurry, it is always available on Ebay.
Only other place I can think of that might carry it is Disc Exchange. The US release is the full uncut version and is released through Media Blasters.

Q was a rough one for me. I watched it but ended up selling it. Sometimes Miike's violence toward women can be ignored - In Ichi it arguablly helped fuel the plot and it is an over the top violent film to begin with. But in Q, I just felt uncomfortable. The intended effect I am sure, but I've no interest in seeing it again.

I think in most of his films Miike is constantly pushing the buttons as far as how japanese men view women(how they're treated in their society). But in this case(and Happiness of the Katakuris) he places emphasis on the importance of a strong family unit. This is probably the most disturbing film he's done, depicting the total breakdown of a dysfunctional family, and showing once again why he's cinema's most daring (and often dangerous) directors. Imagine the heart attack this family would give marriage counselors. Most will be turned off by the depravities(hence my earlier statements),but to me his work is so very important because there's no way the mpaa would allow an american artist to express themselves in this type of manner. Even with the insane behavior of the family, healing does come at the end, just in a manner we're not used to.
On a side note Bubba it's thrilling to meet someone who has similar cinematic tastes,I'm going to that festival this weekend and I'll try to pick up some interesting things(like you I've found it's not a good thing to share, but I'll sure as hell dub to vhs or dvd)! And I'm finally gonna see Dead and Breakfast

I like your interpretation of Q...Not sure if I had the same feeling of healing at the end, more an overwhelming of pessimism. I just couldn't feel any love for this family. I did love the family and the film of Happiness of the Katakuris. I saw this right after Q, so it was an especially pleasant surprise.
He has an odd take on the family in Zebraman too. Here, the hero, a bored and uninspiring teacher, finds his life beginning to mirror a Kamen Rider type super hero from his childhood, Zebraman. He even begins to take on a more involved and caring husband/ fatherly role - Just not with his own son and wife!!! Instead, he becomes a surrogate for a widow and her crippled son, like he is trying to have a different family. His own wife and son are largely ignored by him and the director. Just another strange element to a Miike movie.
Let me know what you think of Dead and Breakfast. Sounds fun. The Ordeal sounds great too. I've read some very twisted reviews but have stopped short of reading too far. I want some surprises!
