House of a 1000 Corpses written and directed by Rob Zombie

Warning: I am not a movie critic

According to the press I've read after the movie was made Universal Studios was a bit freaked out and declined to distribute this little gem so Lions Gate picked it up. And a good thing, too - it is a lovely thing to behold. The opening scene sucks you right into a surreal carnival trip. The plot is one of only a handful of horror movie plots - 2 young couples have car trouble in the middle of nowhere and get in lots of trouble when they're kindly offered a place to stay for the night. (If you think your family is dysfunctional this movie will make you feel much better.) The photography is great, (the slow motion scene where the cops bite the dust is very pretty), the sound track is excellent, and my favorite B-movie horror queen from the 60s and 70s, Karen Black, is perfect. I even went at night and paid full price - not something I normally do - and I was not disappointed. It's the edited version that's in theatrical release so I can't wait to see the uncut version. Even in the theater there is plenty of blood, gore, violence, and tortured (and then dead) cheerleaders. Happy happy joy joy

He really did get almost everything right with this. I enjoyed the first half of the film the most. It nailed the setting of 70's horror (Hills Have Eyes, Last House on the Left, Chainsaw) and the cast was perfect. I cannot get enough of the extras on the DVD with Baby, Otis, and Captain Spaulding - Why I can listen to the "tiny F**ked a Stump track over and over again boggles the mind.
