Honesty

There is a difference between honesty and flaunting that which could be painful to another. Lies tend to be a waste of time and effort, but not everything needs to be said all the time. My two cents.
Don't listen to that guy! He's gonna lead you down the path of righteousness. I'm gonna lead you down the path that rocks!

I believe honesty is best. I mean, if it's something that will cause pain to someone, they have the right to know the truth from you. If it's something that's trivial, they shouldn't be all that upset anyway. It's just bad to live under false pretenses. I've done it before. Learned lessons the hard way.

I did not mean to live under false pretenses, just that there is a difference between truth and flaunting, a difference that is often ignored. If something should be told, then by all means tell it- but don't rub their nose in it if it hurts them. Say it once and leave it alone.
Unless, of course, the subject is Christmas or birthday presents. Then you are justified in lying your ass off to keep it a secret.

Oh no, I completely agree with what you said. I was just throwing my opinion into the mix on the whole situation. I have just been burned by other people's lies in the past that I have gotten to a point where I only want to hear the truth. It's nice to have someone be open and honest with you.

Just to interject, being a person to strives for brutal honesty.
As far as the x-mas presents go, you don't have to lie about them. Any lie is a conscious decision to deceive. You could always answer questions about x-mas presents with "You don't really want to know....do you?"
There are more than enough ways to mislead without resorting to lying.
"Mommy? Am I going to die?"
"Yes dear.....just not right now."
