Program on LOTR music

For all of you Tolkein devotees...today's "Sound and Spirit" radio program on WUOT was all about music inspired by the LOTR trilogy...it was really interesting, covered music from settings of Tolkein's songs to Led Zeppelin to a Scandinavian symphony to parodies...even included a clip of Tolkein himself chanting in Elvish... :mrgreen:

did they mention the fact that in the second movie (and in some commericals for three) theres a clint mansell rip off they use constantly thats thats NEVER credited to him? dunno its a sample or a re -recording... but if you watch requiem for a dream youll notice what im talking about. he scored that flick, i own the soundtrack, that big dramatic string section in the commericals is STOLEN.
least ive not seen them credit him anywhere.

Actually, the program doesn't cover any of the music from the movies...it's about music inspired by the books themselves, and it also talks about some of the musical influences on the story...

Hey I noticed that crossover too..................But I also noticed the string intro to Romeo and Juliet too in other commercials for other movies....its dramatic I guess

i don't remember actually hearing it in the 2nd movie, but i know what you're talking about, i love that song. i think it is actually titled 'requiem for a dream". i don't think i have seen a trailer for 2 or 3 that didn't have that song playing in the background. i never realized they weren't giving proper credit, though. i've noticed they do that alot. the song from romeo in juliet, i think it is just called"overture", i would have to actually look at the case. thats been in lots of other movie previews, and the song that was playing in one of the trailers for "the musketeer". not the saliva song, its a really dramatic, acapella type thing. i have it, but have no clue who created it. also used in several movie previews. i don't know. maybe since its just a movie preview, they don't have to credit the music. i would think they would anyway though.

as i recall,theres different versions of it for the times it appears in the movie, but its mainly in the summer overture and winter overture. the riff itself is referred to as the overture, but is only a riff and not the actual song. and Kronos Quartet may have played that melody but they didnt write it. Clint did.
there is no music on the soundtrack titled after the movie. =)

getting back to topic, id say your going to see a slew of film scores ripping LoTR off in general anyway.... they have been (so far) dramatic as fuck

For that matter, when was the last time you watched a sword fighting flick that you DIDN'T hear the theme from Conan:the Barbarian???

Which, if you notice, is very similar to Holst's "Mars:Bringer of War" from his "Planets".

Well...perhaps I wasn't clear, but this program is actually based upon the trilogy of BOOKS...(minor confusion as to why it's now in the Films section, but hey, since that's the turn the conversation has taken, oh well)...but anyways, has anyone listened to the program itself? I KNOW there are a lot of hardcore LoTR fans out there...somewhere...just wondering... :shrug:

Great show! It was awesome to hear Tolkein himself chanting.

As for that piece of music being stolen, it's highly unlikely. It's either been licensed for use in the trailers / movies, or the composer himself doesn't feel like it's close enough to his to do anything about it.

Studios very often use existing music in trailers, in order to give the advertised movie an air of familiarity. How many times have we heard the Beetlejuice theme on a trailer, or the Aliens "hydrogen explosion" cue?
