Judgement House
Judgement House
I work down in Lenoir City, and I noticed signs for a haunted house today - Judgement House. Now, with a name like that, it has got to be a xian based haunted house. I'm wondering if it is anything like the one depicted in the documentary, Hell House. They followed the construction of a haunted house by a church in Texas that was based on such horrific events as a rave, a black mass (using the Star of David as a centerpiece, though they did change it once they realized their goof), abortion, teen suicide - you get the idea. At the end of the tour, the guests are offered the choice to enter a prayer room or leave and be damned.
My understanding is that these haunted houses were pretty big in Texas and the south, though this is the first one I have actually seen. Anyone know anything about Judgement House and what organization sposors it or is this the first year? Just curious.

To me, it sounds more like a cult gathering for brainwashing defensless people than a haunted house.....I'd go with a gun.

I have a friend who works in one of the halloween dramas with her church in Sevierville. I don't know about Hell House but a "good" church isn't going to tell you that you are damned if you choose not to pray after going through one of their judgement houses. They would understand that people process things in their own way and at their own speed and some may not come to the same conclusion as the person standing next to them. Yes, I am a Christian and so, accordingly, I will stand up for my religion. I go the extra mile to not judge people and not push a Bible in anyone's face but I hate to feel like my religion is being thumped on. Believe me, there have been a lot of times I've gotten along with non-Christians better than the "supposed Christians" as I like to call them. I don't believe it's my place to judge and I don't believe it's my job to preach so if that's what this sounds like, sorry. I just hate it when I feel like some people judge me BECAUSE I am a Christian when I don't judge them for their religion or their lack of religion. Sorry, I will step off my soap box for now...it's been one of those days.

Never step off your soapbox! That's what they are there for
Because yes, your religion is being thumped on. Sorry. I am very opposed to organized religion and will always step on my soapbox to raise an eyebrow. I don't mind voicing my opinions and I would hate to not be able to hear yours. Sometimes (like I'm about to) I get out of line
They don't have to wag a finger to damn me - the fact that they have to make a spook house that generalizes problems stemming from many sources, and pass them off as boogymen christians should be afraid of bothers me. What? Christians don't murder? Christians don't have abortions (like that is evil to begin with)? I just don't think of these issues as fodder for a spook house. Also, this is only in reference to the houses I saw portrayed in a documentary, not the ones here in town. I have never seen them and do not know what they are like. That's why I asked.
To be fair, I think that these events are primarily attended by christians anyway, and if you don't know what you are in for before going in, you deserve it. On a side note, the only people who really sounded like pure idiots in the Hell House documentary were the spooky kids who came out of it cussing and raising hell without being able to form one coherent sentence or argument.
Hey, there's no way I can adequately voice my feelings toward organized religion without being offensive because I am against all aspects of it. Nothing against individual christians - you go your way and I go mine, but I hope we can be civil as we pass.

The origin of Halloween itself is scary. Something about people would scare people into believing there religion or something. Although i could be getting that confused with Christmas, poeple used to give gifts and bribe people to believe in there religion. ....nevermind

A few years ago I thought it would be interesting to check out some of these Hell houses. I don't agree with Fundamentalist
Christian Philosophy but I thought it would be intriguing to experience someone actually trying to frighten people on Halloween.
I believe the element of fear is being taken out of Halloween. It's great that the kistche and kiddy factor is about but stilll it would be nice to have some actual scares on the holiday.
Say what you will about Christianity, some of it's sects are wonderfully imaganative at scaring people.

Of course, hopefully whenever we meet, we might even be able to be friends. I probably have more friends who aren't Christian than I do that are like myself. The reason for that is I can't stand intolerance and judgement. I understand that there are people who don't believe in organized religion. I don't go to church. As a Christian, I probably should, but I do find hypocrisy a lot in many churches now. I love my religion and I came back to it after taking time to question things. It's where I feel I belong. I recognize and respect that not everyone will feel the same. I just felt the need to stand up for my religion...the same as I think many of you all would for your religions or right to not believe.
Now, I really hate thinking I might have caused a riff at all. I'm very pro-hug and pro-love-everyone....guess you could call me the non-genre, non-label, people loving Libby. So, while I will keep my soap box, as usual, it will stay put up 98% of the time. Only to be pulled out when I am in that icky kind of mood.

i don't hate open minded christians. if i can talk to you openmindedly about religion than that is fine, just don't try to tell me that i am going to hell for what i believe.. and i believe judgement houses are like that....
granted they might be great scare tactics... i just don't prefer them.

See this is what I meant, I'm a Christian and I do try to avoid conflict in all aspects of my life and I KNOW if I refused to pray after coming out of the hell house, in their church and someone told me I was going to hell...it would be on.

People who operate Hell House/Judgement House things are evil. Christians in general i have no problems with. However, i don't consider the people who operate those places to trully be Christian.
i can't go into a lot of details on why i feel this way, because of confidentiality issues. However, i have seen several clients while working as a social worker that had serious trauma issues caused by those places.
There is a difference between a fun enjoyable scare and a messing with people's heads and causing damage scare. Judgement House type places fall under the messing with people's heads and causing damage category in my opinion.

Libby, I wouldn't want to know you any other way! I think that individuals have an obligation to discuss their beliefs. It is when organizations, factions, and groups try to do the same that it becomes damaging, because how can a group really speak for several individuals.
If I ever say anything on this board that you find offensive, please stand up and put me in my place. But do keep in mind that I am not attacking you or your beliefs, but rather an organization that I feel has done a great deal more harm than good.
Now Republicans....Yeesh. They're almost as evil as Democrats. Or wait. Is it the other way around? So hard to tell them apart these days...

to answer the orginal question, yes, judgemnet hosue is just like hell house.
i, too, follow christianity, for i am Catholic. but, i do not believe is my place to judge someone based on religion, race or gender. what a person does, unless it directly affects myself or my family, is strictly between them and their supreme being.
i personally believe that the hell/judgement house type of thing is wrong. not all religions/sects/doctrines believe the same. of course, i also think that dante's version of hell is what it is like. i also believe in purgatory and the different levels of eternity. but then again, i also think that gay people are not evil and i do not think God created AIDS to punish them. God loves all of his creatures, or so the Bible says.
im not trying to bust anyones chops, we all believe differently, thats what makes us individuals and everyone is allowed to form their opinion. they why we have brains in the first place.

I have never heard of a "Judgement House" until I moved here...and really, I would seem to me that the only one to judge is God or the Universe or whatever you want to call it. I guess regular Haunted Houses offend people but Judgement Houses are false, manipulative and dishonest. Yes, I heard of one using the Star of David as a "Satanic" symbol...that is sick, I have good friends that are Jewish. Judge Judge Judge Judge...sick sick sick...
The only hell to me is this planet and this is my last round here...
Judgement houses is just another reason why I am moving away from here.
Sorry, that is my 2 cents...so Boom, there ya go!
