Yeah...cranberry capsules are also much better than drinking cranberry juice for bladder/kidney inflamation..because the high sugar content in the juice feeds the bacteria (or so my old boss herbalist told me).

you are, but quitting caffine cold turkey would make for a very long, very painful 6 weeks. but see, if i set that (no coffee drinking) goal, i know i would fail. what would be the point of that?

besides, i balance out my caffine intake with lots of water to help my kidneys. *knocking on wood* i have never had any problems with my kidneys and ive been a steady coffee drinker as long as i can remember.

In my defense, I am Catholic. I was born and raised Catholic and I am happy with my religion. I know that not everyone believes, but I do. It is what I am, and my faith makes me happy. There are only three things in the whole world at really offends me and that is attacking someones personal religious beilefs and making light of rape and child abuse.

I think that maybe I am just super sensitive today but please this was a serious question and I really did want input.

You should not have to defend who you are. Since I don't know you or your habits or the Catholic religion very well, I'm not very qualified to offer a valid suggestion. The only thing I could offer would be for you to do some internal searching to see what you could give up that would benifit you physically and spiritually.

I was baptized catholic and was raised around it...I now consider myself agnostic...but I am still drawn to catholicism...because catholics are G.A.F. (goth as fuck).

I love my rosary...I love holding it in my hand, I love reading about the saints (St. Francis rules), I love going to the Paraclete and buying those little pewter pendants with the saints on it...when Jay left, I gave him my "miraculous medal" for him to return to me safe and sound, 7/6 day candles rule..I love the little prayer cards..."sitings" of the virgin, any of the iconography ('specially the russian), the fact that my grandmother always has a candle burning in front of a statue of Mary (my grandma is so catholic her name is Mary!), the incense burnt at hight mass, etc, etc, etc.

Plastic jesus's and the tacky alters with christmas lights and tinsel that my great grandfather made make me very happy.

I guess catholicism is just cozy to me...the history, the rituals, etc, etc.

Ok..lets have a knoxgothic "go to mass" day...we can go with little_pocket and get our "catholic on" woot!

hehe...and most everyone knows where my church is.

you know, i read a thing called "im catholic and i derserve it" once. it was sort of a parody, but it basically said that catholic people get what they deserve, being it bad or good. i dont know why i decided to share that, but i did...

that and catholic school girls rule...wish i still had my uniform

Kimmie,
I am an X-Catholic , and I think you know what it is you have to give up for lent. Sorry sister but the coffee has got to go.
And if you need the cafeene to keep from the withdrawls, drink Tea.
It might help.

During Lent you are supposed to give up something that you Know in your heart you could not live without.
So.....say bye bye to Juan Valedez, at least for a couple weeks, and do the Neste splash.

I am here if ya need to yell during a cafeene withdrawl.

Much luck

Being as I am slow as ass on reading the threads, I just now got to yours. So it's too late to make a suggestion. But to help you through your caffiene withdrawls you might try Chi. It's very yummy and has a coffee like consitancy, has black tea for caffene and is even better with a little nutmeg or cinnamon on top. I like my Chi hot the best.

And hey, since you are like the only practicing Chathlioc I know(I also know I spelled that wrong  ) Does your chruch have a midnight mass at christmas with all the pomp and latin and such? Cause if they do I have always wanted to attend a midnight mass. It always looks so beautiful on Tv. Could you maybe take me?

Not cutting on your spellin' hun..but you mean Chai right? Black tea, cardamon, nutmeg, other spices and milk/soy milk...yum..I think "the nectar of the gods" would taste like chai... :)

I like mine iced or hot...

yes, my church does the midnight mass thing. its really nice.

we can go this christmas, if you like.

i like going during easter too. good friday is the only day of the year that the altar is shrouded in black and there isnt any evidence of Christ anywhere in the church. the eucharist box thing is open and empty. i know its because it symbolizes the day Christ died,
but its just odd.

I'm giving up red meats (beek & pork) and Cokes (sodas, pop)

I usually just giv up pork, but this year I'm gonna give up more.

Now a question:
Can you have what you gave up for Lent on Sundays?

Giving up coffee but drinking caffeinated tea is like giving up heroin but smoking opium.

Seriously, only the first few days of caffeine withdrawal should cause you any discomfort. After a week at most you'll be fine. I used to drink four or five cups of coffee a night and Mt. Dew during the day and have found that withdrawal symptoms only occur for the first few days of cold turkey. Nowadays I consider drinking more than one cup of coffee a day to be absolutely verböten.

And why do you say you know you'll fail? Give yourself more credit than that. You have control over your body. Drinking coffee requires you to physically make it or at least pick it up and raise it to your lips. Those are things that you can simply not do, if you choose to not do them.

Generally during Lent I give up not shoplifting. I call it the Lent Shopping Spree.

I think this year I'll give up not doing heroin and smoking crack.

when you give up something for Lent, its for teh full 40 days. and on fridays, typically you abstain and avoid meat products.

i avoid meat products...not too good at the abstaining part.

You're lucky, then. I gave it up flat when I discovered I was pregnant in 2000 and had a caffeine withdrawal headache for two months solid. The day I stopped breastfeeding my daughter, I picked up Mtn. Dew and haven't looked back. Probably shouldn't have done that. Personally, I'm going to see if I can make it without chocolate. Which is dumb, since today I bought a large bag of Reese's miniatures without thinking about Lent since 1. I'm not Catholic and 2. I haven't been to church on a regular basis since I was 18. Gotta fix that, really, but the longer I'm away the more I grasp the shallowness of the people at my former church, and why I never felt welcome. Granted that was the youth group and they were all teenagers.

Kimmie,
I would be interested in bringing the midgets to the Good Friday service if you could let me know times and such.
They have never been exposed to Catholicism. Their sperm donor insists on shoving fundamentalism(Baptist) down their throat and tells them that they will burn in hell if they follow any other way. I have attempted to expose them to Judaism & paganism. They experienced a bit of Luthern when we went to my grandmothers funeral. I'm trying to teach them to be open-minded and research other religions and find what works for them. Not what their sperm donor says works for them.

So...with all that said...when you know more about it, please let me know details on the service.
I personally have never been to a Catholic service(except my great-grandmother's funeral) and would like to check it out.

this is rather like not firing that lighter up, for a cigarette. the only reason i could see someone failing, is if someone else beats the crap out of them for being an asshole while they're going through withdrawls.

now, if i were to give up something dear to me, it would have to be my charming sense of humor. not being able to hunt down images and articles that scald other people's sensibilities would be quite annoying for me.

i suppose that it's a Good Thing™ that i'm not catholic.
