I was playing Enemy Territory with a friend from Cali when it hit. She described it as "scary"

They're usually only scary after the fact. You don't have time enough to build it up.
I can remember one night in Knoxville, sleeping in the middle of my living room and moving my daughter in with me because of severe thunderstorms and tornado watches. "Stay away from windows" and whatnot. The weather back there often terrified me.
I should also mention that last year I took a training course on earthquake and disaster preparedness. I'm actually a certified community first responder. That course made me a lot less afraid of earthquakes.
The death toll for the last major quake in this area (The 1989 Loma Prieta, or "World Series" quake) was 69 + 3 due to indirect causes. On the other hand, Katrina killed over 1500 people in Louisiana, alone (add to that about another a couple hundred more in other states and Cuba, and an estimated 700+ still missing).
By far, the deadliest kind of disasters in the US are floods and tornadoes.
I should also point out that Tennessee lies on a major fault. The only non-man-made lake in Tennessee was created by an earthquake. Seismologists predict a 90% chance of a major quake of 6.0 or higher will hit the region by 2040. Of course, out there you have no earthquake proof buildings, first responders, expectation, or response plans. When it hits (and trust me, it will), it will be more like Indonesia or Pakistan getting hit. The death toll will certainly be in the 1000s.

and rent's not *that* bad.
A friend of mine just got a place $650/month. Nicest damn refrigerator box I've seen, too. He cut a window in the side, and it has this *amazing* view of the overpass.
