Pink Floyd Founding Member Dead at 60

by Jim Kouri - LONDON, UK -- The legendary British guitarist, singer and songwriter Syd Barrett is dead, according to the London Sun.

In 1965, Barrett was a founding member of rock band Pink Floyd and was one of its biggest songwriting talents in the early days.

But his behavior became erratic, and he split with the band in 1968. He has since lived reclusively in Cambridge.

A spokeswoman for Pink Floyd said he died peacefully a couple of days ago, aged 60, and there will be a private family funeral.

Barrett's style created a new style of rock music along with King Crimson that eventually led to jazz-rock or fusion.

Damn, one of my early musical inspirations has passed away.

Syd was Floyds original Guitar Player and primary song writer during Floyds more Psychodelic period. Syd had a nervous breakdown (which heavy drug usage is rumored to have been part of the cause) and left the band. Much of Pink Floyds later works written by Roger Waters (Bass and vocals) for Floyd's argueably three most popular albums, "Wish You Were Here", "Darkside of the Moon", and pretty much the entire album "The Wall" were songs about Syd.

Just a little backgound for those who don't know who Syd was

Rest In Peace Syd

Complications with diabetes.

"Shine On You Crazy Diamond" was also about Barrett.

As the story goes, while Floyd was recording this song Barrett actually stumbled into the studio and stood there and they didn't recognize him at first. He then attempted to brush his teeth by holding the brush still and jumping up and down.

Isn't "The Wall" partially about his life, partially about Roger Waters'? Or is it completely fictional?

EDIT: Well, I know not ALL of it is true, lol, but just the main idea is what i'm asking about...

The simple answer to everything is YES.
The wall is not a biographical story per say, though it is based out of a lot of Roger Waters life as well as Syd's

For example: Where Pink shaves all his body hair in the movie was in large inspired by an instance with Syd.
During the recording session for "Shine On Your Crazy Diamonds" for the Album "Wish You Were Here" (an album largely written about Syd years after his departure from the band) Syd showed up unannounced at the studio. The band had not seen him for some years and didnt immediately recognise him as he had gained a lot of weight and had shaved off all his hair including his eye brows. As the story goes in his madness he was in the studio holding a toothbrush level with his mouth and jumping up and down to brush his teeth. The scene was so bad that it left Roger Waters in tears...
I could go on the story of the Wall but it would turn into an epic post...
