Consumers Should Not Use New Google Desktop
San Francisco - Google today announced a new "feature" of its Google Desktop software that greatly increases the risk to consumer privacy. If a consumer chooses to use it, the new "Search Across Computers" feature will store copies of the user's Word documents, PDFs, spreadsheets and other text-based documents on Google's own servers, to enable searching from any one of the user's computers. EFF urges consumers not to use this feature, because it will make their personal data more vulnerable to subpoenas from the government and possibly private litigants, while providing a convenient one-stop-shop for hackers who've obtained a user's Google password.

it should also be pointed out that google is activly fighting subpoenas from the government for information in their databases Not that I consider it a good idea. I would not do it. but some people might find it convenient, which is why google is offering it as an option.

Holy Shit!
If they saw what's in my harddrive, there would be some geek at a desk in the Pentagon jacking off.

i'm looking into this right now, as i'm rather fond of this service, since it's way, way better/faster/more reliable than windows' default indexing.
i'm willing to bet there's a way to prevent even the non-techs from accidentally enabling that "feature".
