The human brain is a pattern-matching network. When it can't find an exact match, it cues to the best match. This is why people see faces in smoke and other random patterns. This is why you can see someone from afar and think "That's my friend" and as they walk closer, there are moments of uncertainty until "Oh no, that's not him." The human mind is an amazing thing. It will substitute imagination for perception when perception isn't clear enough to match exact patterns.

unfortunately, it's still rather sloppy compared to a decent implentation of the Boyer-Moore algorithm.
