I've been talking about this in another forum. The excuse people have who really just want more things to shoot, is that feral cats are depleting the song birds. I'm willing to bet that feral cats live more off scraps and garbage than their hunting instincts.
Fact is if people would just spay and neuter their pets, and if cities would invest more in spay neuter release programs, the problem could be remedied in time...But where's the fun in that?

Isn't the killing of cats how they last started the um...plagues?
Let's not forget that the rodent population has everyone outnumbered here. Cats do help keep that under control. Although "back in the day" they thought they were evil creatures and destroyed them...in turn causing plague. people are so fucking stupid.

Exactly. Those fundie christians in the day thought cats were the consorts of witches, and had them killed. The rat populations fourished, and those rats carried the Bubonic Plague which wiped out 1/3 of Europe.
For those who are Pagan/Wiccan, that is an excellent example of the 3-fold karmic law at work.

As a hunter (and please don't jump on me about that, I follow the Native American code and don't take anything that will not be consumed or used to it's fullest extent), I personally think that hunting feral cats is repugnant. I have to agree that this is just an excuse for some people to shoot at anything that moves.
Spay and neuter!!! Stop dumping unwanted animals where ever you can throw them out of the car without getting caught. Take responsibility for your pets.

A few states allow people to shoot cats ..so don't get up in arms about this as it will never get voted in.

We need to stop the states that are shooting cats right now.

BC is right, it is legal to hunt cats in South Dakota and Minnesota...Has been for some time now. But sometimes it is easier to stop new actions from taking place than putting the kabosh on something that has been around for a while.
If feral cats are that much of a problem, then it should be left to animal control in individual counties to take care of. If they do not have the funding, and cannot get the funding, I suppose it is not really that much of a problem is it?
But to solve the problem by giving joe citizen something else to shoot is asking for trouble. But then again, maybe I am biased.

Typical of our American culture isn't it. Got a new problem we can't deal with? Got something that we don't understand? That's ok ... Git yer gun and start SHOOTING AT IT!!!

After all, you got your 2nd Amendment to the constitution that says you can, right?
I cannot believe the culture of violence we live in. And in all places, Minnesota. You'd think they would have already learned their lesson after what happened at that school up there.
But then, maybe some people never learn.

another thought is .......how many of those 'feral cats' actually are wild or stray or whatever?
think of all the people you know that let their cats (or dogs, even) run around outside all the time, and better yet, without a collar or name tag or microchip.
le sigh. it never ends.
whats really sad is that there is only a small percentage of people that actually care and take responsibility for their animals, and that is never going to change.

I think there should be a federal law allowing people to hunt cats, no matter what state they live in. As always, though, there should strict guidelines to go along with said law:
- The cat must weigh in excess of 100 pounds. There's logic in this: where's the sport in hunting Garfield? Let's breed a bunch of leopards, tigers, and lions, then go and let them loose in the middle of St. Paul. Ten minutes later, hilarity ensues.
- No firearms. If you're too pussy to go after game without a shooter, you're too pussy to be able to brag about taking down a big one to your friends over a brew. Thanks to Uncle S&W and Grandfather Glock, anyone can point and click. Be a man, use a bowie.
- You must coat yourself head to toe in deer piss, like all real hunters. And, as everyone knows, feral cats love that shit.

Amendment II
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.
I don't see anything about killing cats or anything there...
I'm a proud owner of firearms myself, and back up The Bill of Rights, support the NRA, from my cold dead hands and all that shit... but hunting amimals that some people keep as house pets is... eh, just wrong to me.
And if your life is not in danger and your not gonna eat or wear it, don't shoot it.
Unless it's human and just asking for it, of course.
