Saw this on Slashdot. I'm always happy for any free increase in internet speed.

I already have 384k up with bellsouth, and can you get a true static with comcast (I've seen/heard varying reports on that)?
I still wanna see 512k or 1m up for a realistic residential price.. THEN I'll be impressed.
maybe one of these days speakeasy.net will get around to putting a POP in south knoxville... though I've been wishing that for years now.

Our standard speed is 4 down/384 up
For 10 bucks more you can get 5 down/768 up.

Just wait for Verizon to roll out its fiber service (FIOS) that's in testing now.
For about 50 bucks a month, they will offer 15Mbps (yes that says 15 as in one-five) down and 2Mbps up. Hell for around 39 bucks they offer 5Mbps down and 2Mbps up. Same D/L speed as your ADSL or Cable, but orders of magnitude better up speeds.
....or if you are so inclined you could pay 200 bucks a month and get 30Mbps down and 5Mbps up.

what about static IP and is there any port blocking? How good are the news servers? I saw something about limited news access with comcast.
I would give all sorts of sexual favors to have a REAL isp in town.. one that gave useful internet access in the form of a simple intenet connection with the ability to have a static IP or.. dare to dream.. a small subnet, without any messing around with blocking ports. Add the use of my first born for arcane rights if they let me do my own reverse DNS.
who gives a flying four letter word about "up to 10 email accounts!", "50mb of web storage!", "free antivirus software!", or "Free content blockers!"
give me solid uptime, shell accounts, static ips, and reasonable rates instead. Heck, I couldn't even tell you what my bellsouth username/email address is.. that shows you how much I use it.. only needed it once to set up rp-pppoe and from there on out I do everything myself cause ISP's just don't offer it anymore.

I saw someone mention that in the slashdot article. I checked out verizon's site but it doesn't look like they offer anything at all here yet... that would be nice though.

Just went to the comcast website and checked availability. Looks like they're showing the speeds available in my area. I'm thinking about possibly calling to check on paying the 10$ extra a month for the extra bandwidth. I could care less about 6MB down. I'm sure I will maybe once a week connect to a server and download something and it actually put out the bandwidth needed for that.... or maybe Slashdot might pull up 2ms faster. Mainly, I just want to double up on my upspeed. That would really help out for remote connections to my home computers when I'm away.

God, I wish that comcast would beef up the upload speeds. Uploading files when I'm maintaining the nashgoth site is utterly dismal.

Static IP you have, as for the other things, you're asking questions too technical for me. If you wanted to find out, call 637-5411 and follow the extensions as though you had a problem with existing internet service. I think it's 1, 1, 2, 2 at each prompt, but I could be wrong.
