2004 VOTER GUIDE

We are the Knoxville League of Pissed Off Voters. And, yes, we are pissed off. But just bitching about political disempowerment in this country has not effected change. To build political power, we have to make our voices heard. To do that, we’re building a Pissed Off Voter Bloc. Local elections often come down to a couple hundred votes. If 500 or 1,000 of us vote together, we will run this town.

We’ve endorsed the candidates who come the closest to our values. Join the bloc! Vote our slate!

We believe in a government that will:

Create social support to strengthen families.

Foster a spirit of shared responsibility and community.

Bring all voices into the public dialogue.

Protect our right to privacy and our freedom of choice.

Make real opportunities available to all.

Use government to invest in the public good.

Be a respected and respectful citizen of the world.

President
John Kerry          Tennessee’s a swing state. Vote Bush out. You know the rest.

US House of Representatives, 2nd District
Skip it      Neither one deserves your vote – seriously consider running for
office.

Tennessee House of Representatives, District 6
Cindy McGill               Wants better schools, jobs, and health care.

Tennessee House of Representatives, District 13
Harry Tindell               Pro environment and working people sure do like him.

Tennessee House of Representatives, District 14
Keith Downen          For a living wage, against building new roads, and promotes
alternate fuel use.

Tennessee House of Representatives, District 15
Joe Armstrong          Pro-environment, pro-labor, pro-choice, pro-you.

Tennessee House of Representatives, District 16
Skip it       The guy who is running wants “voluntary, teacher-led prayer in
public schools.” Need we say more?

Tennessee House of Representatives, District 18
Mike Carroll Supports a living wage and public schools, and he
won’t beat you up.

Wheel Tax: Damned if you do, damned if you don’t
If you vote yes, you’ll pay an extra $35 each time you register your car. If you vote no, you’ll get a property tax increase. We think that property taxes are more fair, because they spread out the burden more equally (bigger house, bigger taxes – bigger car, doesn’t matter). But, the people who are opposed to the wheel tax seem to be just anti-tax, anti-library folks. Do what you want, but be grateful for your extremely low taxes (except for sales tax, which is high, unfair and makes your groceries expensive). Let’s spend more time working for an income tax, and less time bickering about 35
bucks for your car.

You can’t vote often, so you might as well vote early.

If you are told you are NOT on the Voter Roll, ask to speak to the Elections Officer. They will call the Election Commission and double-check. If your name is not on the Voter Roll, you can still cast a PROVISIONAL BALLOT.

If you need transportation to the polls, call 584-9050.
