According to a recent report Knoxville has come in at #9 for the most expensive cities to keep a new car running.

Slow your roll there for a sec, I will agree that the Wheel tax is a bit high but you have to: A) First look at where the money is going, the majority is going to much needed school repairs, and B) if the wheel tax doesn't pass the county mayor has already said he will push a property tax through, and you folks can do nothing to stop a property tax it can not be put on a referemdum. The county will be getting improved tax revenues one way or another. Just a thought from someone who works with a politicain every day.

We really need that. I go to Central, and it really needs repairs. The air conditioning/heating system goes out constantly. There are ceiling tiles drooping and some with brown stuff. (Water marks? Mold? I dunno.) Every time it rains hard there are garbage cans in the hall to catch the rain. The bathrooms have very few stalls with locks, and in one particular bathroom only one stall with a receptical for tampons. Our school fees have gone up. Food costs have gone up. I'm the co-president of the art club, and we have lost sooooo much funding; I'm sure other classes and clubs have as well. There are plenty of other things as well. And this is only in one school.

A quick note. The money isn't going to go to repairs. It is going to a new West knoxville high school. In other words, you are paying for the rich Farragut parents to get a new state of the art school. It doesn't do crap for all the beleaguered schools already in existence.
Not to mention, some of us poor folk who depend on our wheels for our livelihood are not in a position to pay said tax, and will hence lose our jobs and become dependent on the state.
So really, please do not vote for the tax. Property tax is better, though income tax would be best.

Competing with Sioux Falls for least expensive city were Grand Forks, N.D., at $7,150; Knoxville, Tenn., at $7,176; and Cincinnati, $7,271.

actually this says that knoxville was was one of the least expensive. But something tells me they are not factoring in the wear and tear from all of the god damn highway construction that has been going on for as long as i can remember and i have been here 21 years.

The survey covered various expenses of car ownership -- fuel, oil, tires, insurance, depreciation, taxes, as well as fixed costs like license, inspection, and registration fees -- but not random items such as parking fees and fines for tickets. They were figured using a 2005 Ford Taurus sedan with features such as air conditioning, auto transmission, speed control and anti-lock brakes.

This also was not very acurate. I am sorry, 1 car can not represent the majority of cars on the road. Exspecially a ford.
There are to many variables that were not taken into account.

Taurus are pieces of crap. Get a Mazda.

Also, we don't have inspections here. Hence, we have no inspection fees.

Well, I just got my 2004 property tax bill, and I'm still going to have to come down against the wheel tax.

(And I'm in a position where I can dodge the wheel tax - easily.)

Even with the 18 cent increase, my property tax will increase by about the amount of the wheel tax on ONE car. This is going to hit somebody with a $250,000 house in Farragut a lot harder than it will hit me.

While I would prefer my property tax not go up, I think the property tax is a MUCH more fair tax than a wheel tax.

Of course, a heavily progressive income tax would be the most fair, but it's unlikely we'll see that in TN soon.

Has the wheel tax already gone into effect? Just asking because last week Danielle got her tags renewed and it cost $60 compared to last years $30.

There is a referendum on the November ballot to repeal it.

I feel pretty much how everyone else feels about taxes. I don't mind increases as long as the money is used wisely. Sadly it never is. For example, my daughter's 2nd grade reading book is the same one I had when I was in 2nd grade. And I don't mean it's a reprint of the same book because I checked it and its a first edition printed in 1983.

That's not necessarily a bad thing. A science textbook from 83 isn't good - but thre's not really a need to replace reading texts every few years if they're in good condition.

The problem with a wheel tax is that it's a very unfair tax. It hits those who are least able to pay the hardest.

$60?!?!? And you people are complaining? Christ... I'm moving out there. I renewed my tags last month. $112. Property tax? Knox County is $2.96 per $100 of assessed value. Shelby County (Memphis) is $4.36.
I'm very much against a state income tax. If I have to cough up any more money to the government, I won't be able to eat.
