Ok... I got my learners permit... Now what? Not like I can really do anything for 6 months other than "learn" how to drive.

Feel ya. I got mine about a month ago, but no one has time to teach me to drive. But at least I have an ID now. Comes in handy at the movies and to cash my paychecks. You have to hold it for 6 months, but I'll be 18 before then.

I wish I had gotten it when I was 15, but my family is lazy. Oh well. As long as I can drive when I'm 18, I'm good.

Take your time, & practice as much as possible. Some nervousness is good, but too much can be very bad out on the road. Stay off interstates completely until you are much more sure of your abilities. I'm 32 & I still don't like the interstates!
Good luck to you!

I learned to drive with my friend Jill in the cemetary on Tazwell Pike. It's nice. Big, lots of roads with stops and turns. Uphill, downhill. Little traffic. Then we drove around in a small neighborhood behind there, and she tricked me into driving on Beverly and Greenway. I even passed people, and no one was killed or maimed. I guess that's a good start.
I went with my mom once to Central's parking lot. She told me not to accelerate doing turns, and that I had to stop more smoothly. She never has the time to take me anywhere else though, and now they're having band camp.
So...I will most likely continue learning to drive illegally with friends.
Good luck!

I started my daughter on the Central parking lot, too. Then we moved over to the Lynnhurst cemetary. Next step is the one you mentioned on Tazewell, though. Cemetaries are great places to learn to drive, since it's not a public road & the residents obviously don't mind!

Even though it sounds a little hokey, this worked for me. When I was learning to drive and was nervous around other cars, my friends took me 4wheeling (or mudding). We took a 4x4 truck into the woods and riverbeds and I basically had to make sure I kept my speed, while dodging anything that got in my path. There were chances to roll it over, crash into trees, bust a tire, break an axle, etc. But after it was over, I had no problems with interstates or other cars, cause I knew if I could go flying threw the woods and not hit anything, then I would have no problem on the open road. (much more room, and alot less opstacles.)
Good luck

Be careful!
My friend tried to convince me to drive on Tazwell after being in the cemetary awhile. I said
noooooo. Scary.
Nah, if I tried to four wheel I would hit a tree or be thrown off or something. I don't have the best awareness and coordination. I run into things and people just walking through the mall.
