need some help

Here is the problem. I am looking for a pool cue as a gift. Fact is, I have no idea what makes a good pool cue. The only ones I have ever used are the ones that have been in random bars, and if I ever sink something besides the cue ball, it was only by sheer luck.
My questions are what are the best types of wood, some of the better brands, etc? Any information would be helpful. I'm sure a lot of the selection of a pool cue is personal preference, and although I've done some reading on the internet, I was hoping to get some personal opinions.
I've already gotten a list of places that carry pool cues in Knoxville and plan on hitting a few on Saturday, but if anybody can suggest if one or two are better than others, it would be helpful and maybe save me some time.
