The Dracula’s Ball; A Review

At 10am on Friday morning Karla, Hardcoregirl, and I loaded into a rented Kia and pointed it toward the great state of PA. The trip itself was quite nice filled with countryside alive with lush vegetation that grows over beautiful foothills and mountains. I81 and I95 have to be some of the most beautiful stretches of Interstate I have seen. We stopped for the night in Aberdeen, MD which lies just a few miles away from the Delaware boarder After stuffing ourselves we flopped out at a Super 8.
We got an early start the next day and managed to travel the last chunk of the trip to Phily in about an hour. We unloaded the car at the hotel located right on the river in the Center City / Penn’s Landing area and immediately got back in the car to find club Shampoo. One we were pretty sure we knew where we were, we headed to the Digital Ferret record store in the South Street area.
South Street is a happening little shopping district that is very similar to five points in Atlanta. Restaurants, coffeehouses, bars, and clothing stores abound along with a pleasant mix of tourists, locals shopping, drinking, and making merry. South Street is also where the famous Zipper Head is located (as in “One Saturday I took a walk to Zipper Head, I met a girl there and she almost knocked me dead”). We ended up spending most of the day shopping and having touristy fun.
Flash forward to the ball: We got to Shampoo at about 8:00pm for DJ load in. The club is a multi-level affair with 3 main dance area. I was informed by Partick Rogers (the event promoter) when we got there that I would be covering the Velvet Room located downstairs. This turned out to be great because the Ball was an all ages event but you have to be at least 21 to get to my part of the club so I had a lot of folks that looked like they would have happily fit in at Sanctus. As far as numbers go, I would say that at any one given time, there was at least 600 people dancing and drinking in my area consistently. I don’t know what the numbers were but the upstairs was absolutely packed assholes to elbows as well. Everyone I talked too was really nice, staff included and I got all kinds of compliments on my 5 hour set from staff and attendees that were impressed that I wasn’t afraid to have fun with the music I played. The dance floor remained packed till the bouncers started herding people out.
Unfortunately, I didn’t get to wander around or see the bands but Karla and Hardcore Girl can tell you all about all the rest. Pictures soon!
