dont believe everything you read. it got alot right and alot wrong...
for a minute i thought that was setite propaganda
Crowley was involved in in the golden dawn, the OTO,then he STARTED Thelma(spelling? been awake too long)... im agreeing with that. but he N*E*V*E*R claimed to worship the devil. hes way to ego-driven to announce worship in any one thing.
LaVey did the church of satan for money but i think he ended up believing it himself (in my mind he did anyway)
The Temple Of Set (i.e. Setites) has been around since the druid-driven days of religion.
Michael Aquino did start a BRANCH but not the real deal. He does like to take claim though...
Satanic dabblers.. i gotta remember that.
and as for gothic satanism, i think the goal was to tap on old form Ritual Satanism, the people who REALLY worshipped the devil.
details on those are sketchy even to the people who kept the traditions alive, but ive met a few. Irony abounding, most join the Chruch of Satan Lavey started just to convert people back to old form.
One of my good friends says that LaVey satanism is a valid religion and he believes in it. To that i say, hey if its what you dig....
Its heavily to be debated if it is or not, and i dont care either way. If you say it is, sure it is. But its not tied to Crowley (who LaVey admired) or to old form much past influence.
and no im in no way whatsoever a satanist, i just read into it for YEARS.

I thought that was the invisible ink that all the important documents are written in, like the part of the Constitution that allows for revisions whenever some religious group gets their union suits in a wad?

Actually, once upon a time, yes. I was much more of a practitioner of LaVey's form of satanism - no belief in a horned god, but a firm believer in the power of the individual. Philosophically speaking, LaVey came from an interesting place, though not a unique one. Of course, he lost me with any hocus pocus, which always struck me as simply something to scare the pinks with. And the man was all about fucking with pinks, a consummate showman.
My main interest in pursuing satanism was just a reflexive action to the years of having christianity showed down my throat. I felt that it was the best way to fight back, although, spiritually, I didn't buy into it as a religion any more than christianity.
In hindsight, I still adhere to many of the philosophies, but I take things from ALL religions that make sense to me. That is really how I see all religions - a series of guidelines about how you should live your life. Some guidelines made sense at some point in the past, some continue to make sense today, and some never made much sense at all except as a means of control.

I totally agree & think that as well. You hit the nail on the head! And I know all about having the "redneck religion" shoved down your throat! (At least that's how my brother-in-law describes the Baptist's!) lol I really try not to discuss what I believe here, so as not to get any "Im right your wrong" thing started. Honestly I don't know what I believe, but I have a pretty good "idea". Of course I've dabbled 'n such, we all have there's no doubt, but I'm really not drawn to just one certain area of "belief", they all make sense & they don't because they all come from the same source. Sometimes I make sense sometimes I don't, & so does everyone else because we all come from the same source. All religions seem to derive from each other, contradict each other; all for one thing.......you said it Oni.......control. Vernon has the idea that religion has been the cause of war more than anything else on this planet. And I would almost agree.

LaVey was a great showman , course he was also full of shit....I love him for that, people believed him because he exploited there fear...a fear that could have been eliminated with the smallest of mental efforts to understand satanism....one book and a short one at that.....The ideas are what guide me not LaVey's paper tiger image....Im not trying to be right or anything I just enjoy the occasional (very occasional) discussion of various religions....My initial foray into satanism was also a reaction to force feed christianity...later it just made the most sense...the idea of drawing from a variety of religions is a good idea. Nobodys set of guidelines are gonna be foolproof because human existence is so much more complicated than our understanding...Just so it's been said I am not a spokesperson for the church of satan these are just my opinions...

After years of having christianity shoved down my throat,I too first looked into satanism as a sort of rebellion against it all.I have studied a very wide variety of religions and as was stated above,I take things from all of them.I have never found a religion that suited me or my personal beliefs enough to become a follower. Although I have no personal belief in god,I think that a lot of religions really have set forth some good moral guidelines. And although the majority of people who claim said religions do not follow those guidelines, nevertheless I think they are a good thing. All the fighting and bickering between religions has always been so rediculous to me.To qoute the movie Enemy Mine: "Truth is truth."
