Sorry, just watched Southpark the Movie last night again - that song is stuck in my head. I received an email from a friend this morning regarding the group Truemajority.org. Headed up by Ben Cohen of Ben & Jerry's, the group's focus is getting more of the money set aside for the defense budget put into programs like education and eradicating world hunger. Lofty goals, but the flash video introduction makes it look pretty ludicrous that these goals cannot be met.

Of course, anytime anyone seriously talks about lowering the defense budget, they talk about lowering troop benefits, hazardous duty pay, negating raises. How about stoping production on bigger and better weapons of mass destruction or building one fewer spy plane a year?

You don't even have to lower troop pay, if you want to spend less on troops. You just recruit fewer of them. After all, most of the military only keep their job for 4 years or so.

We're spending an insane amount of money on the war department (these days, calling it "defense" is silly - we've not fought a defensive war since the 1940s, and we're unlikely to any time soon) and any defense needs this country has could be handled by half the military we've got now. Combine it with some military spending reduction treaties worldwide, and it's not even slightly risky.

Well, it was recently pointed out that we have enough nukes to bomb every major city in the world in the area of 100 times. Why not just 10 times. That would save us billions of dollars a year.

I went ahead and joined BTW.

And think of all the electricity you could generate with the leftover fissionable material.

I think that's a bad idea enviromentally and poses a huge security risk. But that's me.

Oh come on guys! If we did that then America could only flex thier muscles a little bit, not Govanator style. We wouldn't want to damage the ego would we? Because we all know if it comes to helpign people or saving lives, the Ego is always first.

the only thing I want to disagree with is that a lot of the big cases of world hunger comes from conflicts (let us not forget somolia), food production is not a problem (yet) its actually getting the food to the people (this would require us to build many many more exhaust spewing trucks) and then some how drive these past all the war lords and badits (we've cut back or gotten rid of the military remember).

but I do agree we dont need all the nukes (except to scare all those with fewer nukes)(plus it would be cool to buy one of those abandoned missle sights :D )

and unfortunatly we can't make deals for global disarmament since no one trusts us any more :-(

(midless ramble rant mode off)

You're forgetting that most of these 3rd world countries are being held back economically due to farm subsidies.

More than enough food is grown, it's just the people who need it can't develop to where they can afford it, so they have to wait on poorly managed aid programs for food.

Billions in subsidies for products with huge surpluses, billions in aid for countries who can't develop an economy because any starting point in farming is profitless.

Makes you wonder....

Yeah. People don't listen to logic. It is my opinion that something can work too well for it to be considered correct.

There's too much feeling and not enough actuality in the wrong sense and it's just the opposite a lot of time with love.
