With the Lenten season upon us,which starts on Ash Wednesday, I must decide what to "give up" for Lent.

Every year i usually give all beverages except for water and i allow my self one cup of coffee a day. but im not doing that this year.

I welcome any suggestions.

I actually had a friend of mine give up all soft drinks, fried foods, chocolate and all alcohol during Lent. It wasn't easy for him, but the party that transpired after Easter was quite entertaining.

I'm not catholic, but, if I understand Lent correctly, you are supposed to give up something that you love dearly. Do you watch alot of television? do you drink alcohol? do you smoke? are you anal about going out in public without makeup on? I don't know you very well at all, so it would be difficult for me to make a valid suggestion.

Sorry, I gave up being Catholic for Lent years ago. Haven't felt guilty about it, either.....

yeah, i guess religion is different for everyone. and most religions, the "goal" is to pass on the next level. i know that is a very basic
statement, but it is true. in all religions, in order to a religion, has a supreme entity to try to achieve or become equal with.

but, back to the Lent question. OK, i have tried in the past to:
-abstain (bad bad thing)
-stay away from alcoholic beverages
(would work, but we tend to hang out in bars...temptation is great and i have no willpower)
-all beverages except for water (bad because i drink at least 5 pots of coffee day)
-TV (that was too easy)

so, i think i have it narrowed down to three things

1. give up sweets of any kind
2. i could give up "time" and volunteer my weekends.
3. give up meat products all through Lent instead of just fridays

go with that one.... :)

if you need any ideas for veggie meals..let me know...(I also have kids veggie cookbooks for food that lil Karin might like, since kids tend to eat what their 'rents

My grandmother gave up coca cola last Lent..it was so funny...after easter mass we went immediately to a gas station so she could buy a coke...

Coca cola has been the only substance I've ever had a problem with...this week I decided to switch to diet dr pepper so I at least am not getting all those empty calories.

I thought the point of Lent was that you were supposed to give up something that is hard for you to give up.

If you're drinking anywhere near that much coffee, you should give it up for longer than Lent. That's absolute hell on your kidneys and nervous system. Seriously.

you are, but quitting caffine cold turkey would make for a very long, very painful 6 weeks. but see, if i set that (no coffee drinking) goal, i know i would fail. what would be the point of that?

besides, i balance out my caffine intake with lots of water to help my kidneys. *knocking on wood* i have never had any problems with my kidneys and ive been a steady coffee drinker as long as i can remember.

Cranberry capsules from a health food store are awesome for any type of kidney problems.
