I know this is slightly old news but I still find it facinating.
Examples of ordinances for which a city may only fine an offender $50:
Neighborhood protection Code violations related to neighborhood maintenance (parking junk cars in the yard indefinitely, excessive trash in the yard, dangerous housing, etc.)
Building code violations (failure to get a building permit, etc.)
Animal control violations (vicious animal assaults, rabies vaccination and health issues, and nuisance violations)
Historic preservation Illegal demolition of historic significant structures protected by zoning
Environmental protection Hazardous waste
Illegal dumps and landfills
Violation of dump and landfill regulations
Quality of life issues: illegal dumps, storage
Dumping tires and other debris that collects water, creating a mosquito hazard
Environmental regulation Unsafe structures
Land/waterway abuse
Violation of environmental codes
Violation of subdivision controls
Violation of flood control regulations
Inadequate excavation safety
Failure to control noise
Failure to control smoke and plant emissions
Clearcutting of trees
