The Believer

Post by Liriel »

I found out about this film through a friend. It won some awards at Sundance and has a DVD release now (even though it's rather hard to find). I recommend it because it's a great testiment to the power religion has over people.

The basic premise is based on a true story (and a true person) who lived in New York in the late 80s/early 90s not sure which, who was born into a Jewish family and who went to a private Jewish school. Along the way, he starts questioning his beliefs and eventually grows into this contradiction of a person in his teens who wants to hate his own religion for all it's faults and secretly embrace it because he believes in it depsite those things too. So he becomes the leader of a group of neo-nazi skinheads who cause problems and pick fights with other Jewish kids. A reporter finds out about him and threatens to expose him.

The plot is about his struggles and the trouble it causes him and how it effects the people around him.

The true story behind it is that this boy met the reporter who found out about him and said that he'd kill himself if he wrote that article in the paper. Well he did and the next day the boy committed suicide.

It has a good cast with riveting performances. If you can find a copy I suggest you do.

Yes, that is a fine film, indeed. I saw part of it on a preview of Sundance on some other channel and rented it to see the rest.

It's been on my list of movies to rent for quite a while now. Can't wait to finally see it.
Signature lines are boring and stupid.
