Someone came to me at work today told me this story had been on the 6:00 news. I'm not sure if they were talking about local news or not.

I'm tired of the media making goths out to be a bunch of slacker kids and miscreants. I think we should speak out. This community is comprised of many kinds of people. Most of us are educated professionals. I think it's high time somebody blew this stereotype out of the water.

first, i have to say this. when visiting a new town, alone, it is never wise to go into any bar and bring four strangers into your hotel room. now, of course the media will turn this into a whole thing about how evil the gothic community is. a few years ago, when krista pike slaughtered those people, they made a big deal about the tattoos she had, blah blah blah...

i, too, am tired of the mislabeling of the gothic community. whereas, am not gothic myself, i enjoy the subculture and lifestyle. someone other than myslef should write to the editor of the newspaper addressing that many in the scene are upstanding people and good americans. hell, even pay our taxes!

Eh, seems like the police just want to know what happened a little better. Trust me.....being in on this sorta situation before, i'll let you know that if these people had nothing to do with it, and their innocence is abound....its not like they're going to get busted for nothing.......

of course there are cases like http://www.wm3.org/ so nothing can be said for sure.

No less...it looks as if these people were either in the wrong place at the wrong time, or killed this dude.

Neither of the stories said the people were goth, they just said that they had a "goth" appearance. People are just calling them like they see them. If I see some kid waking through the mall pale wearing all black, black hair, wearing ankh's guess what I am going to assume they are goth. Hey it may just be me but if someone is wearing the outfit you are going to put them into some sort of catagory based on the information presented. But what do I know.

I'm personally amused by the headline for the Atlanta story.

Georgia man found dead in New Orleans tub
Police seek 'goths' for questioning

Its almost like they're asking for a line of them at the station or something.

Yeah, far more killers are "normals" than are dark and spooky. They just single out the minority to blame. I think they should seek to question "preppies" for 99 percent of murders. gah.

Cartoonists seem to generally make EVERYONE look bad. That's their job. To make fun of everyone.

It looks to me as though the media is just quoting the police department, which it turn is probably trying to convey the simplest description of the people they want to question. I'm not sure this is really an instance of anyone trying to demonize the "goth" community, although the media has certainly been guilty of that in other instances.
Police departments often use terms like "goth" as a kind of shorthand -- most folks have an idea of the stereotypical "goth," which is why departments might use it as an adjective to describe someone they're looking for. On the other hand, media outlets use all kinds of policies to try and Jamaican bobsled team the impact of using stereotypes in their broadcasts. Some of them (like our local paper, The News-Sentinel) even go so far as to not use the term "black" or "African American" in stories where a black person might be a suspect in order to not appear racist (for instance, if the police say they're looking for an "African American male in his 20s," the paper only report that police are looking for a "male in his 20s").

Well thats something you don't see everyday, positive media representation. Anyways, yeah they pretty much nail it on the head, even here I've heard good things about our crowd from outside people, especially the weekly run venues we've had in the past. Outside people who come into the scene should be a bit apprehensible I say, tho I know it prob won't happen, especially if its Sanctus. But what I am trying to say is pretty much, watch yourself, because we's watching you. :oneye:

What I can't help but find amusing, the average "goth" in this particular community is between 25-35, has a reputable job, most have a family that is functional in society....wtf????? Just cause we like the color black and wear unusual makeup, we are murderers???? I think not....IMHO, a true goth is someone that has overcome the stereotypes and is what they are, regardless of what other ppl think. forgive my lack of correct grammar......LOL....been indulging in Russian coffees.
