I'm gonna have to call "bullshit" on that statement. The only people who don't write their own music are like, Britney Spears. And what's popular now are all those "guys with guitars" who "started out playing their own songs in coffee houses", like John Mayer, Damien Rice, Jason Mraz, etc.

Well then,I'm gonna have to call 'bullshit' on that...Look at modern 'Rock' radio...& look at who wrote most of the songs...Of coarse there are the singer/songwriter types that won't play anything that they didn't write...Which all of your examples are(!)...But what about the other bands that hit the top-40?...Seriously...Even alot of Interpol songs where written by Joy Division members..............

Stop smoking crack, Trevor! Interpol isn't in the Top 40, nowhere close. And they don't really sound like Joy Division. And this is coming from someone who loves Interpol and Joy Division both.
Now, if you want to talk about "totally unoriginal", let's talk about Muse (Radiohead rip-off) and all those horrible "new rock" bands like the Strokes, Jet, etc. I'll leave the Killers off that list, because at least they're fun and vaguely original. But that Jet song that literally copies "Lust For Life"? Iggy Pop should sue them for that.

Erm...I'm only saying one thing. I dislike radiohead but I have loved Muse since the first time I heard them. Yes, radiohead was out before Muse and yes, there may be similar sounds but I've listend to quite a bit of both and personally do not think that Muse is a total rip-off. No one has to agree with me but I have to voice my opinion for a band that I not only love to listen to but who is also extremely nice in person as well. Bash what I say if you want...it'll still be my opinion.

Muse is only a rip-off of some Radiohead, definitely not a rip-off of their weirder stuff.

I don't bash people. Like Muse all you want. If I can accept that there are people in the world who somehow actually think that Slipknot is "heavier" than Bardo Pond's first few albums, just because Slipknot is all angry or whatever, whereas Bardo Pond is truly "heavy" in the sense that their songs are massively loud and riff-based and just happen to have beautiful female vocals buried among the noise, then I can accept someone liking Muse.
I really don't care what people like. I only care that they make sure they like what they do with full knowledge of what else is out there (for example, people who like Death Cab For Cutie but have never heard Neutral Milk Hotel).

Ok. I can understand that. I guess I'm too used to being on the defensive when it comes to some of my bands (my brit-pop and my bands like Peter Searcy, mainly). Sorry.

Jack...Sweet, lil' Jack...I never said that Interpol is Top-40...But, they are popular...So, there we go...& if you really wanna cut to the quick...Everything that comes out is a rip-off of something...With the exception of new technology...
Yes, Jet did rip-off Iggy Pop's "Lust for Life", hardcore...But I don't think that was the issue...& don't get me started on Slipknot...Not a huge fan..But don't get me started...

Just a thought from watching Chris Rock last night...
How come a rock star can't fuck a conseting 14 year old girl...and is in jail the next day...with no wintess to the act...
But Micheal Jackson can molest 3 children...several people confirm it...and it takes months for us to indite him?
The only slack that I'd cut 4 a child molester would b from thier noose.
I don't think that really count as child molesters for fucking people who are consenting at the age of 14. If they were like 10...possiably differant...but a 14 year old girl who is unsupervised online ( which I am going to gather from the chat rooms...) Should be well aware of sex, and what comes with it... If not, that's just shitty parenting...but they can't be ALL that bad parents...After all they did turn them in...Must be some concern

Everything that comes out is a rip-off of something...With the exception of new technology...
I'm going to say Tom waits is origional...

Listen to a Xiu Xiu album and tell me they're not original...
And I didn't say Slipknot is bad, what I'm saying is that I don't understand some people's definition of "heavy" music. Most of what is called "heavy" sounds, to me, pretty darn lightweight.
I mean, in Mogwai's "Like Herod", when they get all quiet, and then out of nowhere, this monster guitar riff jumps out at you and FUCKING DESTROYS, to me, that's a lot "heavier" than music where the guitars are so distorted they just sound like... someone chewing on corn flakes.
