Hey! Watch it with the kraut remarks bruiser! Just because the KG and the 914 run off hamster power doesn't make them inferior. It's just less expensive to buy a new hamster or two (unless the hamster has to have the Porsche emblem on it.)
Actually I was referring to
performance Porsches, like that way-overpriced 911 Turbo. But, yeah, fancy gadgetry aside, they are really inferior, performance-wise, all of them, to real musclecar performance machines. All you have to do is get behind the wheel of one these wild animals to learn that.
Hey, we only have 24 votes at this point, but it looks like we have an unofficial forum already.

Hehe.. I won't argue the engine performance but, I KNOW the Kraut Karts would own you in handling
When next I have a 914 on the road again look forward to doing some Autocross W/ Michael Xi ! My little 914 1.8 was THE best handling car I have ever driven and that was before suspension mods and no sway bars.
I will admit a secret love of AMC Javlins pre 70s GTOs and Mustangs, however the only dream hotrod I have right now would be a 50s Packard hearse done in mother of pearl white and lotsa chrome. Not sure of what motor I would use (definately not the stock straight 8 )but I want it supercharged!!!!!

I have to agree Bone. My Ghia seems to handle better than my Cougar (which is obviously "sporty" but by no means a "sports car)...by leaps and bounds with no mods whatsoever. Just the stock 30 year old IRS and 15x5.5 tires. The feel of the road is much better. However, I've never driven a Camaro so I can't speak to that. I know the bhp of the Camaro is higher than the Porsche 911, but how much does weight contribute to performance? I'm assuming, though I haven't checked the figures, that the Camaro weighed a great deal more than the Porsche.
Seeing as how D wants to auto-X his 914, I think I'm obligated to root for him, no offense.
I'm a low maintenance girl....I just want my Audi tt.

Anyone in SCCA?
I'd like to join, there is a pretty good SCCA Ralley group in Chatt. and N. Georgia. They have quite a few corses, and they have races at Road Atlanta and a couple other road tracks in the area.
Anything like that going on up that way, how about up Tri-Cities way?
I'd like to build a dirt track racer and run at Atomic Motor Speedway. I was thing street stock, get a mid 80's GM 4 door, put a cage in it and go. Anyone here dirt Trackers?

Hmm. You read Grassroots Racing don't you?
Actually, Andrew, I was not referring merely to engine performance, as I would think that would be quite obvious. Hell, my Camaro, weighing about 2900lbs, and powered by a 450hp(dyno-proven 450 @ the flywheel, and theoretically close to 400hp @ the rear wheels!) 400 cubic inch small block, did the 1/4 mi trick in 11 sec flat, and the 0-60 feat was performed in around 3.5-4 sec most days(cool, dry days), all on 17"x9.5" American Racing TorqueThrust wheels and Goodyear Eagle street tires. It was the suspension mods you couldn't see that made it really special. Dick Guldstrand's (famous Corvette racer) advice on relocating the (front) upper control arms for camber gain, combined with Koni shocks, Global West lowered front and rear springs, and PST's polygraphite bushings and BIG swaybars made that Camaro the best damn handling car I have ever driven(including a Viper, a Lotus Esprit, many BMW's, many Mustangs old and new, and even a couple of Porsche 911's), with only one exception- a C5 Corvette Coupe that my buddy who works at Beatty Chevrolet
"borrowed" from the lot one weekend. I don't think the C5 had alot more laterall grip, but it had excellent balance and transition qualities, like it wouldn't
let me overcorrect. My car actually out-performed the 580hp Yenko Camaro pictured above by virtue of modern suspension and tire tech. Now, I know a smaller car, with it's smaller wheelbase, can be fit into a smaller, tighter circle- it's basic geometry. Such cars have a great advantage at events where it's all about slalom @ relatively low speeds, such as SCCA parking-lot rally races, but I seriously doubt that would ever come close to making up for the power deficit on a road-course. Anyway, I never met anyone on the street with enough balls to race their Porsche 911 Budget-Buster through the twisties. But I have to know one thing, Bone. You're about the same height as I. How in the world can you tolerate sitting in one of those cramped little go-karts? Every time you let off the clutch, you're hitting the R-hand turn signal, and scraping your shin on the dash, right? Aw, shit. I must build another. Let's all build some cars and go down to Road Atlanta.

Why spend all the money to modify a car to handle as good as or better than a Porsche when a 911 would come from the factory ready to romp some twisties on a road course? Sure most people have an issue ragging out such an expensive car. Big horsepower and heavy car anyday over a ricer but I'll still choose a vintage or newer Porsche anyday over a camero. My father, for many years owned a 69 GTO convertible black on black 400, four barrel, four speed which would definitly get ya moving and I hope to one day buy it back from the guy who bought it from him. Once my 914 is up and running I'd have no problem going head to head with you in auto X. It would just be pointless for me to talk trash to you over a quarter mile or even an open course. However, I think I could more than hold my own with a factory set up only with stiffer springs and stickier tires. Believe it or not, a 914 may be go-cart in outer size but the interior room has enough legroom to fit Shaq,a ton of head room even with the top on and wide enough to sit three deep if the seating was there. I also look at it as less weight to move and less air to move around it. Eh, keep your Camero... Dime a dozen and anyone can modify, but few come from the factory as ready to go as a non bastardized Porsche. Wish I had the money to build a strictly track car. I'd love to tour Road Atlanta. That'd be sweeeeeet!

BTW...It's easy to do pre- race trash talkin when your engine and car is still in pieces hehehe

Now once I get it together and running I'll be just plain unruly!

You're missing the point. I can buy, build, and modify 3 Camaros for less money than a 911, that would whip the dogshit out of same 911 anywhere but maybe autocross. I like real cars that can kick ass on the street everyday. That's why I like roadracing. The courses are designed to reflect the type of performance challenges you'd likely encounter on the street or highway- broad, sweeping curves, tight switchbacks, short and long straights, etc. Some of the courses are partially routed on real streets. Racing your 914 in autocross is probably real fun, but putting a tiny car through those little cones will only help you beat me to a good parking spot at the mall. On the street, I will pull the paint off your cart, with the AC on full-blast, and my buddy in the passenger seat and the two chicks in the back will testify they were there when it happened, after they change their underwear. If you want to see some real auto racing, I suggest you check out the SCCA Trans-Am series.

Ahhh yes, but come Christmas we'd get to see who get's a good parking spot and who'll be parking out in BFE. And really, do you want two chicks in the car whining about going too fast? I only have room for one of those :p

Actually the 914 is probably one of the roomiest of small sports cars for those of the long legged (one of the beauties of the mid motor) First time I recall seeing a 914 it was owned by a guy I worked with who was 6'5. HE even fit in it comfortably! The seat in my 914 goes back far enough that I would have a hard time drving it (reaching petals) in full back position. They are truely a tardis like extra-dimensional vehical... much bigger on the inside than the outside. Getting out of it is kinda a bitch though cause your butt is even with the door sill and sitting about 8 inches off the tarmac.
Now if I could get my Alfa Romeo sold I could get back to work on restoring my Porsche again.... *Sigh* fun toys

I'd spoken w/Vader on the subject of an additional forum before... I'm curious to see if this goes anywhere...
CelticSmith: Oh, yeh, GothCarTalk... Nice! I'd be up for it... Hell, I bet we could even get on public access television... hehe!
I'm gonna stay out of the whole 'Muscle'-car vs. import thing... It's like discussing religon, or computers.. (mac/pc) Everyone thinks theirs is better... blahblahblah.. I know where my loyalties lie, and I have *extensive* experience in both.. (and many other things) Just not woth the debate... Just enjoy your love for the internal-combustion engine, and keep sucking down those dinosaurs.. hehe!
It would be cool to have a 'sponsored' racer for the KG as well.. maybe a group of things... (vintage bike racer, auto-x, SCCA club racer, 10sec. 1/4 miler, etc...)
I'll make t-shirts! ie: 'MEMBER- KnoxGothic Race Team' Vampires don't just suck blood...we live on Gasoline!
hehe!

Anyone can make any car go fast in a straight line. Import, domestic, homebuilt, doesn't matter. You could make a shopping cart break to 10's in the 1/4 mile if you poured enough $ into it.
You can also wheel anything, I've seen it. A classic CJ2A on a narrowed and shortened Chevy 1 ton truck frame, running rockwell 2 1/2 ton military truck axles, a big block, blah blah.
Stock or appearing stock is the way to go!
A race team would be nice!
They, whoever they are, want this car forum to be in the GothGeek section. I'd like to see it as its own section cause cars aren't really geeky. Yes there are car geeks, but there are also car people.

Yeah, yeah. I just like to banter car shit with car people. I'll take car prople over non-car people all day, even if you don't like the cars that are really cool.
KnoxGothic race club? I'd be all over it. Have any of you ever heard of the Nevada Silver State Classic? It's a cannonball-style top-speed race. I will build my next Camaro specifically to compete in this race, as a publicity stunt for my near-future enterprise. You start just outside of Las Vegas, and you get to go all out on 90 miles of public highway, blocked-off for race-day by the Highway Patrol. I know it's all the way across the country, but imagine if we all crashed their party with a bunch of gothy black machines! Check it out:

The Flat Fender Jeep Club here in Athens was founded by a guy named Sam. He is really cool, he and I are planning on racing in the Great American Race in a couple of years is a Flat Fender Jeep, hes got dozens. We're gonna rebuild one from scratch and take a complete Jeep in parts less the body and frame. We're planning far enough ahead due to costs.
What about doing the One Lap race that Brock Yates sponsors? Its where you drive across the country and take hotlaps at most of the major race tracks. Best lap time total wins.

Yeah, the One Lap Of America is a cool race, but you have to be able to take a really long vacation for that one. It's also often won by attrition.

A racing club would be cool. I'd certainly be interested in it once my car is finished. However, my car is going to be silver, not black. Is this a pre-disqualification? hehe
