The fact that you are asking this question at all tells me you are well on your way to grasping at beliefs that are larger than life.
You have been blessed. Surrounded by open thinkers, and a mother that encourages self exploration and self expression. Your friends, I can assure you, have had no such luxury.
They are simply swimming in a sea of confusion (take whatever you are feeling and multiply it, at least by 3.) They are lacking the support system required by growing young adults.
You, on the other hand, just keep asking questions, don't fall into the stereotype, be your own...the beautiful, open-minded, compassionate young lady that we all respect. Find a goal, find a role model, and don't let you opinions or emotions be belittled by those who may not understand you. There are a lot of us that do.
Keep posting...or start a blog and never stop sharing your thoughts and feelings.
