There's also the rule about 'native sons' that prevents states from casting their total votes for a candidate that was born there; something the popular vote doesn't reflect.
A state can cast all of its electoral votes to a Presidential candidate that is a resident of that state. It's just that the electors can not elect a President and Vice-President from the same state. Which is why Dick Cheney got his residency changed to Wyoming real quick before the 2000 election (he had lived in Texas for the past few years).
The Electoral College is a crock because it puts more power in the hands of small states, offsets the poweries of large majorities in states, and tends to produce an election that only focuses on a few "battleground" states, while the rest of the nation gets ignored. It's undemocratic, but you do elect the Electors (who vote for the person they are supposed to vote for a good 99.5%+ of the time), so you are voting for your candidate in a way. It's just that it only counts for your statewide total and not in any national popular vote.

Write him in anyway. It's a big pain in the ass to do that in Tennessee, but I'd still do it if I were you and I really supported that guy. I wrote in someone for the TN Governor's Race in 2002 (no way in hell I was going to vote for Bredesen or Hillary - they are both scum)

There aren't more than two if you actually want Shrubbie out of office.

I think those of you who think W. is the most evil man on the face of the planet, don't quite grasp the fact that the GOP is run by people FAR FAR WORSE than Bush. Bush isn't even that bad; it's just that other people are pulling his strings.
A vote for Kerry just to get Bush out of office, is just a vote for another equally corrupt and incompetent GOP President in another 4 or 8 years. This country needs extensive and widespread reform. The problem is not going to be solved simply by getting rid of W.
I've said it a million times, but Bush II has not been the only horrible President of the past 2 decades. Reagan was WORSE. The only difference was that Reagan was a actor and thus, a better liar than Bush. There's no reason for me to believe we don't just end up with another Bush or Reagan in another 4 to 8 years with a coward like John Kerry in office (who won't stand up for anything).
