Pop Music's What Ifs ...

If it's not covered by one of those other categories, you should probably talk about it here. Be nice.

Pop Music's What Ifs ...

Post by The Liberal Vampyre »

Ok, I was listening to Faith No More's Angel Dust tonight (one of my favorite albums of all time), and I started thinking, why didn't Faith No More release "Be Aggressive" and make a video for it?

Obviously, Angel Dust is not a very pop-ish album, is very dark and concept oriented and it was going to be difficult for it to sell as many copies as The Real Thing did (with it's super-hit "Epic"), but still, releasing "Be Aggressive" and making a video for it, might have allowed Angel Dust to be a much greater commercial success than it was.

Not that it matters so much to me. Angel Dust is my favorite FNM album, and it is the favorite of most die-hard FNM fans, but it just seems like it would have made more sense to make a sort of dark video, with something approaching Gothic cheerleaders singing the chorus of "Be Aggressive/ B-E Aggressive/ B-E-A-G-G-R-E-S-S-I-V-E" rather than make videos for "Midlife Crisis" and "A Small Victory" which were only going to attract a certain audience (people like me :) ).

Anyway, that's my random thoughts of the night.

I believe it was because that the song was too personal to the keyboardist of FNM. That song was his coming out song, and I think that they didn't release it because of how personal it was to him. I agree that it is a kick ass song, coming from only a partial FNM fan, and a vault of useless information. That's just what i think on the matter though.

Seems like i read it somewhere as well, but then again i could have been imagining it or someting, i've got a friend who's a huge FNM fan so i had to have this conversation with him as well and i think this is what we came up with.

Maybe because FNM weren't the kind of band who cared about releasing singles? Might as well ask why Mogwai never did a video for "cody".

Thanks Yulie...I lurve ye...*ahem*

I have to agree that ANGEL DUST is the best FNM album released.
the comment about "Be Aggressive" being Roddy's song is very true..But, one of the main reasons it wasn't realeased for a video was because mostly the personal matters it delved into with Roddy's life, and the fact that Mike wrote the lyrics...Which in turn makes it a biased point of view. It is no secret that the FNM guys really didn't like being around each other that much..And used interviews and other form of media to turn against each other and air their dirty laundry. This song and "R nR" where other ways of releasing pent up aggression they felt towards each other.
Which in turn, and doubled with the fact that ANGEL DUST wasn't the next "Real Thing", made record excs nervous and at times downright pissed at them. SO, sure they made a couple of singles off that album...They HAD to make the quota. The band themselves wanted to make "Jizzlober" and "Malpratice" the singles, but actually didn't have the say so in the matter. Which is sad...cos those a great fuggin' songs.

"Be Aggressive" would have made a great single...BUt, at the time...Did you ever hear a band talking about "...Ejaculation, Tribulation, I Swallow."? No...It was the early to mid 90's...And that wasn't heard of then. Now, it could be done..The media has grown somewhat tolerate to such things. Maybe get Spike Jones to direct it and have this psuedo bondage theme to it....It could work.

oKOKOK...I guess I have been waiting awhile to talk about some FNM. Glad to see that there is other people that aggree that "ANGEL DUST" is a great dark, somber album. BUt, then again "KING FOR A DAY, FOOL FOR A LIFETIME" was nothing but brillantly made pure Agro-rock. And ya can't beat that with a stick.

I just hope that mike's current band TOMAHAWK starrt getting bigger.....Saw them a coupla weeks ago, and let me tell you...The band where on top performance and Mike can still deliver the goods.
Hopefully we will see a video from them soon.

Until then...I'm gonna listen to "Crack Hitler" and eat my Corn-Nuts.

There's only one person that i've heard that much detail about FNM at one time, he's a really good friend of mine and possibly the biggest FNM fan in the area, you two should really get together sometime and talk about FNM until the crack of dawn.

but yes i agree that Angeldust is their best album.

Shit, at some point I'll have to jump in the frey... my group came up as the Wicked Cow People about the time FNM was getting popular and Mr. Bungle was way the fuck underground. I was raised on that shit practically...

Thumbs up on Crack Hitler, and damn the Be Aggressive song for the sheer fact that I can't get it out of my head (yes its that good still to this day). I'll be out somewhere and just hear the damn cheerleaders start up...

Another thing... I love Trey Spruance to death... what a fucking brilliant guitar player and I loved his contributions to FNM... suffice it to say I loved every incarnation of that group, Jim, Trey or that other guy... but I loved Album of the Year best for one song that makes me want to punch a nun or just club a baby fur seal... "Naked in Front of the Computer"

how about Just a Man???

Geezz.... ok... gotta go before I become a Jizzlobber

Thanks Littlepockett... I was a member of a previous incarnation of the Cow People to the one you saw, but I'm currently in Citizen X with the bass player that you remember. I Remember that era for them tho, I did guest spot on that album....
