gardening?

Postby gwenhwyfar » Sat Mar 27, 2004 1:32 pm

this was the best place i thought to put this. :D
anyone know anything about gardening? tips, advice, suggestions.

i bought some flower bulbs, lots of lilies and gladiolus. i want to make the yard pretty, but i unfortunately don't know that much about flowers, besides the basic watering everyday, sunlight, no weeds in the bed, type of stuff.

the bulbs said to plant them in march/april and they should bloom around june. also, sunlight/partial shade. i'm not really sure what that means, but i assume they need to be in a sunny area. i was going to put them in the front yard because its always sunny there. i wanted to put them in the back, but that flower bed rarely sees the sun. the dogs would prolly dig them up anyways. i'll see if i can find some lowlight plants to put back there. are there any lowlight flowers? anything besides ivy, thats whats back there now.

as anyone can see, i'm very new to this. heather knows a little, but any help would be greatly appreciated. i have never done this before, prolly should have started of with pansies or mums or something like that. i think lilies are more high maintenence, but they are my favorite. i think i can do it. if i can take care or 2 dogs and 2 puppies( without and deaths or serious injuries), deliver 2 liters, and perform some vet procedures at home. SURELY, i can manage to grow pretty flowers.

very open to advice. i'm SURE buttercup will know something about this type of thing. :waits: :boing:

LOL...yep I know a bit...

Um...there are lots of shade plants...

I think Full Sun is 6 hours...so for part sun/shade you'd want less than that.

I know only a small bit of all there is to know. My advice would prolly be to get a basic gardening book that can explain soil, fertilizers, etc, etc.

And there are many plants that do good in shade, one of my favs is Bleeding Heart (so goff).

i found some nice websites on the subject, lilies in particular. i discovered that daylilies CAN survive in shady areas and apparently do quite well. heather will be happy to hear about the bleeding hearts, she LOVES them. she also like petunias and zinnias, which i hate. but its her garden too. apparently they are easier to take care of. i lean more towards the lily family, i found lilies i'd never even heard of, even discovered shit that i had no i dea was a "lily". like hayacinth, another of my favorites. blablabla, shit i'm rambling.

ANYWAYS, is it too late to start making a compost, do you know? i get the impression from the sites i looked at yesterday, that i should have started onne a long time ago. i'll go buy a book or something, surely they have a good big fat used one at mr k's.

we are starting from scratch. and not to ask you to do our dirty work, but we do live in oak ridge. and if i understand correctly, you fancy gardening quite a bit. you are more than welcome to come by and help/ direct/ point iin the right direction/ basically give your opinion. you can bring your son. we have 4 dogs he could play with, 3 of which are pretty friendly, 2 of which are 5 mo old dumb puppies. they love everyone.

if you want, send me or heather a pm. we'll be around.
